I first saw it on Japanese basses with 24 frets early to mid 80's.Think it's a modern design thing. Why don't guitars have them That's easy, compared to bass players guitarists are Luddites. On-board electrics,extra strings,wood/carbon necks, these have been commonly found on bass guitars for near 40 year.7 and 8 strings are still relatively new for guitars. Can't see it helping Prog players,only help a Prog player needs is a bullet

It is specifically designed to help the notes roll down to the pickups, resulting in a much smoother sound.
