Fender did their own Deluxe series in 2001-2005
Honestly they were great and the Precision pickup was the right way around at least
Shame 2/3 of these Harleys don't have classy maple fretboards like the majority of these Fenders.

I quite liked the flipped Precision pickup. Less top on the top strings and a bit more oomph to them too. Seems to balance out the setup to me. I wonder how much difference that makes. Early Gibson basses had a neck humbucker right after the end of the fingerboard while Fender's Precision and Jazz basses had more something like a middle pick-up. The 1957 Rickenbacker 4000 had just one middle pick up and the 4001 added a neck pick-up to it. Gibson kept its neck pickup but added a real bridge pick-up after the Jazz Bass came out. Here's what it looked like on pictures brought at scale:

Then Leo thought "now, I'll show them" and brought out one with three pickups. People still don't know what to make of it…

Yes, that G string does sound like some uninvited guest at times. A more effective compensation is to pluck it further down and the opposite applies to the B string. I find it makes more difference than the pick-up position.

There is no time to whizz about but I don't think a 2cm difference of a pick-up position brings enough of what you want anyway. This would be more like it:

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

The bridge pick-up of the Stratocaster was set at an angle to increase treble on the high strings, the Mustang got that treatment on both pick-ups and the Precision must have been done this way with that one purpose in mind. Balance was not wanted. I wonder why. It was a time when Les Paul's explicitly offered a "rhythm" and "treble" switch. The Jazzmaster (or was it the Jaguar) came with an elaborate circuit for the same purpose. Maybe a comparable duality of roles was intended for bass too?

Pickup placement makes a huge difference in tone. It was some time ago but I remember a moveable pickup system that was featured in a magazine. Two humbuckers that slid on rails to and from the bridge etc. It was to be the solution to all of our problems. And that was the last time I saw something like that.

Moveable pickups are already an old concept. Gibson Grabbber, 70's. Warwick Guy Pratt Star Bass. These are just a few that spring up in my mind, there are even older ones but right now I'm too lazy to search for more.
