Those brown fingerboards don't look like ebony to me, not directly the colour but the grain is not ebony like. Looks more like ovangkol which is a wood species that is used on several HB's as a fingerboard.

Looks more like ovangkol which is a wood species that is used on several HB's as a fingerboard. I pulled high resolution pictures from this ebony, that used in the Fusion models and the ovangkol of the HBZ-2004. Here they are for comparison, Ovangkol in the middle:

Searching for "ebony" on Bing, I get this. It's clearly not the same.

I know that not all ebony is black but none of those fretboards look like real ebony to me. Could be, and would prefer to be wrong but I would be suspect of anything described as ebony coming from the Far East anyway. One only needs to look on Ali to see what they are offering as ebony in the budget guitar rip-offs sector. I think part of the problem is they say Ebony only in relation to the color of the dark stain applied that they never mention. The rest is straight misselling.

There is a brown ebony. Maybe that's what we are getting there? It appears to have the qualities of its black cousin.

There is a brown ebony. Maybe that's what we are getting there? It appears to have the qualities of its black cousin. There is even more white than black ebony. Beautiful wood patterns. Could be, LeoThunder but the grain does not look right to me. Same here, colour is not what's off for me the grain looks wrong, most ebony I know has a very tight to almost 'no grain' grain.

Sandberg copies !! That's the best big-T could come up with To make matters worse my pal Dave-K had a batch of these built 4 years back. Is reversing the split-p enough to claim it's a new bass ? Not in my book it's not

Sandberg copies !! That's the best big-T could come up with That's what they decided they thought would sell best, assuming they have that as a goal. I could be wrong, though, and they might just do what they like but I would guess this is not the case. I have no idea what Sandberg really is. I have a Sandberg gigbag, thrown in together with a bass by someone who no longer wanted it (the gigbag, I had to pay for the bass). It's fine. A quick search for images shows… Fender copies, slightly skewed Fender copies, Fender copies with big humbuckers… Oh, here's a Thunderbird copy, and a Music Man copy and another one with a Jazz Bass pickup in the middle. Yeah, there's a pattern here. Copy the legends and tweak them to make a difference but only within the realm of their own variance. Put that celebrity's nose on that other's face but do not come up with anything unless you know people love it. Fail-safe? It's disappointing and I guess that's just what sells, so that's why Thomann are doing it too. Lower the price of what you already know people want to better satisfy an existing demand. Simple. Let's not expect more.

Compare the white headstock I posted with the new HB ones.

Thomann are doing exactly what I would expect them to do. Find out what is selling and try to sell sell that. There should be no room in good business for vanity.

I realise the pictures of the HBZ-2005 FL I posted earlier do not show an ovangkol but a black walnut fingerboard. The body of the guitar is ovangkol. It can be very nice when you're lucky:

I think most of us immediately spotted the mistake but chose not to say anything, LeoThunder
