Coming from the guitar world, a short scale may not be a bad idea. Personally I prefer short scale, but that is personal preference (and it also helps with some old injuries). I can't speak much for the J&D basses as I only own one, a regular scale jazz. The bass took a fair bit of work to get it to become something I like, but I have heard that they got better over the years. For short scales, I have a Mikro that is a great but I find the 28.5" scale a little too short, I prefer the 30". But again, that is personal preference. The J&D short scales are also 28.5" (if I remember correctly) but as a guitar player you may prefer this. One of my favourite short scales is the the Harley Benton P bass shorty. I bought mine a long time ago, so I can't vouch for the current quality. I know that blablas has been quite fond of them also. Another short scale that is a decent bass is the Squier Bronco, although the pickups are not easy to find replacements for if you don't like the stock ones.

I have been tempted by one a few times but decided I am limiting my instrument count to 15 (or rather space and wife is )

The more I read about short-scale basses the more I like it - especially this Ibanez TMB30: www.musicstore.de/en_OE/EUR/Ibanez-Standard-TMB30-BK-Black/art-BAS0008306-000J&D also has mini basses but I want to see them in real life - I hate scratchy fretends and such. Better to spend more Euros and have less hassle setting them up. I will visit MusicStore soon and try out some of the basses there.

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

Does it have no tone control at all? Headstock shape worries me but these things often look a lot better when they are strapped on. I'm still researching modded Broncos.

Get this. The fool is not shipping it so it will go for nothing serious, it's roughly in your area (Düsseldorf), it's new (2017), it's beautiful and it's the best kind of bass you can get at that kind of price. Slim, light, ergonomic, active with 3-band EQ. You'll even get a good gigbag with it. I got one of these for 200€ a few months ago, I'm never selling it. Only potential drawback: it's a standard long scale (34').

First, decide if you're going to need a 5-string or a 4-string. If you play a 4-string some songs will force you to either tune down (right decision) or transpose (wrong decision) what you play. Think of what songs if any you want to play uses the lower register of a 5-string to weigh the pros and cons of each.
Just never, ever, take the "common" advice some people will give you to always start with a 4-string. Learned this the hard way. Totally different muting techniques between the two, and if you see yourself ever needing 5 strings then start on a 5 string.

Floating thumb works on both and I see no disadvantages to it. It's also fairly simple to learn, nicely regular. But of course, the intended repertoire or style defines the type of instrument.

It has three pots, I guess two vol and one tone!?
