There’s a lot to be said for that subtle use of the wah wah style, I know you aren’t a fan but some Joe Satriani tracks use the wah like that.
Not as much of a fan of the OTT style.
Yeah do like the funky Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Chile style though so maybe I’m wrong!

I'm afraid I'm not into subtle wah (or maybe I am but just don't recognise it ) Here's my all-time favourite wah wah using tune:- I love the way the wah it's not really used in the solo but kicks in again at 2.43

J. Mascis doesn’t usually go for subtle!
Good choice.

DefJefJ. really likes the Brian May/Tony Iommi style treble boost pedal and often uses that. QOTSA are a band that often use a cocked wah as a filter, some Smashing Pumpkins too, it can be a nice touch, to sit your guitar in it’s own little band.

I read a really interesting story about the development of the wah wah but I can’t find it.
Some guy was trying to develop something, it didn’t do what he wanted it to, but they noticed it could replicate the effect when a brass player uses a mute/their hand.
I can’t remember what it does exactly, it’s a bit more complicated than just cutting/increasing treble, I think they designate a frequency “Q” and the wah wah sweeps for an amount either side.

The Cure were sometimes good for mad wah too. I like it's use to affect a note or fill or phrase though rather than having it chucking away all the time. Variety is what my ears like. Listening to Dino Jr I think I can hear the wah in the solo too. Just a boost or tonal difference to the overall sound. Maybe just a pickup change or pedal boost...or maybe recorded separately anyway. Would J. Mascis have done the solo separately? Not sure how they recorded that album but I read somewhere that he often records his solos using a Tele neck pup with everything else on a P90 (usually fitted to a Jazzmaster).

Interesting that you mention The Cure too. They were a huge influence on early Dinosaur Jr.
Listen to "Forget The Swan" from their debut album.
