My 75€ B-5000 arrived today. For some arcane reason only the post knows, it took longer than expected but came without problems, in a nice, well padded gigbag looking almost new, together with a big fat cable and a funny strap. And two old yellow picks. I don't use picks with bass ;-(
It is fully functional. The pick-ups are high output and definitely sound like humbuckers. Or maybe the strings are… well, yes, they probably are but still, these are humbuckers. The single coils of 2003 must have been replaced by what people thought they were buying.
It was set up well enough, with 2 mm action, properly intonated and minimal relief in the neck. It's beautiful, better than on pictures, with a dark neck, beautiful wood throughout and barely a knock on it. The body took three hits right where the plucking forearm lays, visible up close but barely otherwise. Everything works, but this is the dirtiest thing possible. It smells like it's been left in a bar for a year then moved to the attic and left standing there, gathering dirt on top of beer stains and a thick layer of sweat on the fingerboard. I'm going to give this a real clean up. The fingerboard looks dryer than any I have seen and frets will need a good polishing. It will be a few hours before I can play this.
… a good hour of scrubbing later …
Now it's clean. It looks and smells nice. Well, it smells as nice as window cleaning stuff can smell, still better than of 12 blues bars or something.
I don't want to know how many years of… secretions were on that fingerboard.
It has no strings because they are submerged in 95% alcohol. I'll see tomorrow if they live. That B-string is the fattest one I have seen so far. It has a thin part just before the ball end.
In the meantime I thought it would be fun to put the bass next to its younger BZ sister. The sister's fat but I like her anyway (and it has strings on, so I'm pretty sure she will…).
I really like that darker brown of the old model. So nice, and not at all reddish like seen on some pictures.
