I'm sure it originally was, Leo but you would have thought that over the ensuing 60 years they may have been able to phase in a proper 22 fret solution. If each new tele and strat built since 22 frets was an option (whenever that was - mid sixties? Later? Post-CBS?) came with an accommodating pocket then all subsequent necks would fit. The change to 22 frets occured in 1987 in the US and 1984 in Japan. Someone said it was twice more than Spinal Tap and others were convinced.
