I am thinking of replacing my Jazz Bass with a Sire M2. Does anyone know anything interesting about them? How do they compareto the rest of the 400€ price range they belong to?

I have a lefty 1st gen M2. It's a 35" scale and light in weight, the frets are a bit dull (not shiny), the pickups are covered in a rubber like coating which I don't really like the feel of, the preamp is the same as in all Sire's, the tuners feel a bit rough but are working okay. As far as my other Sire's are concerned (V7, VV7 and P7) this M2 has the lowest build and part quality. If you want to know the string spacing I can measure this for you. The first one Thomann shipped me had a stripped truss rod nut, the second one was okay. My comments on the M2 are basically identical on both samples I've had . Compared to the two Chinese F(ake)ender Jazz Basses V I've got (roughly the same price) the Sire is in much higher league, compared to my Ibanez SR305EBL-WK the Ibanez wins in being a more refined instrument, all my other 5 string basses are in a higher market segment.

Oh, I never noticed the M2 as a 35" scale. That changes things. I updated the picture and it no longer looks that much smaller, although the headstock remains much preferable to that Squier monstrosity. It is centered differently, which brings the 1st fret closer in sitting position, so that's a potential plus, both for access as for balance. That 5-string Jazz with wide neck and monster head is the very definition of neck dive. I'm sure I could challenge a Thunderbird owner about it. String spacing looks the same 19mm as the Jazz. I'm not proficient enough to care about this yet. I'm happy when the strings are in the right order (jokes aside, I have a Jazz with 19mm, a BZ with 16.5, a B-5000 with 15.5 and an 8 string guitar with 10.5 - I'll struggle through anything) Rubber pick-ups are an interesting thought. I suppose it's a more comfortable thumb rest and I hope it doesn't degrade or gets visibly dirty with time. How is the Ibanez more refined? Getting a fourth SR would be… a little much of the same… (no, seriously?) but I like them a lot. The 300E is the newer model with the visible pole pieces and the "power tap" switch, right? I have older ones. Is that a valuable feature?

The rubberised pickups get dirty alright but the coating hasn't degraded yet! The refinement of the Ibanez is that everything feels more nimble and smooth even though the finish is not as smooth as on the Sire.
To me the power tap on the Ibanez appears te be more a marketing thing than something useful, the differences are marginal when switching.

Now have a reason to consider that "Black Planet" thing again. I thought I'd get away from it, but no Similar ergonomics and balance, shorter 34" scale and I like that funny finish too.

Can't help you there, find a place where you can try them both and just go for the one that feels and/or sounds best.

Nonono, I'm not driving to Thomann. I'd end up buying a new car just to be able to load more purchases into it But yes, finding a place to try out a few of these would be good. I'd go to the Sire website and look for distributors but I can't reach it. Seems to be down.

Well, here's the comparison I need. Yes, I know, they're going to say both are great, but that won't work. I'm not buying both
