The trick is to get the cheap salami stuff and rework pictures of your guitar with the pattern posted above. Any decent image editor will offer mask filling with a texture, so all we need is a copy of the squares. Thanks How is it done in GIMP? I don't know, I use Corel Paint Something (edit: Corel PHOTO-PAINT Essentials X5) which came installed on my laptop. I never installed GIMP.

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

And this. Scroll on down to the description at the bottom. 3 layers of PVC and one of celluloid. Oh thank you thunderbird . Exactly what I need for my nasty pressed tongue jazz bass pick guard. I'm going for it! I've gone for one of these from China. Let's see if it looks like it should.

I'll forget it's coming and will have sold the bass or something by the time it arrives! Actually, the last thing I ordered was about 10 days - a metre of rubber tubing for 99p to use instead of pickup screws. Yeah, sometimes I get stuff quicker from China than locally.

It does seem hard to find good tortoiseshell guards DefJef. Looks like thunderbird is right you can get them but they are quite expensive.

Well the FLEOR 4-ply arrived and it's not great. In the photo below you can see the scratchplate that is already attached to my Jazz bass and above it the new one. It's better but not right. The one on the bass already has a photo of tort applied on the top layer. This new one seems to have a photo applied and then the final clear ply on top. This does NOT convince as a 3D image or really give any more depth except from this side angle. One more pic of the new one here. Not sure if I'll bother to attach it. Still, on the plus side, it was advertised as having and did come with 25 screws! It would probably have cost me more than this just to buy those screws in this country. Good ole (but grrr) China. It seems not everyone is as discerning as some members of the HBC.

Your probably right thunderbird. Thinking about it I would imagine it is far easier and cheaper to make a bog standard colour or pearlised 3ply pickguard. The good tortoiseshell pickguards seem to be 4 ply with the tortoiseshell semi transparent or translucent. It's definitely a gamble buying one without actually seeing it, as we do online.

Yes, MiC is fine for solid colours, but I wouldn't be too sure about pearlised.
Most people will only buy one or two torts in their lifetime, maybe, why not spend a little more and get the real thing?

I like the look of the brown tortoiseshell DefJef. How much better would you say the new one is on say a 1 to 10 scale? Regarding the 2 pearlised ones I've had from China thunderbird they where both Fleor and very good.
