Does anyone reading this have any experience with HB steel string bowl back guitars? I'm considering a bowl back for a first acoustic and I simply don't want to blow money on even a used Ovation.
Thanks

I don't. Never held one or any other but DefJef will tell you that they slip on your leg unless you wear rubber trousers. Ovations too, not just HB's. I stopped considering one after I realised how large they are. Again, this is a characteristics of acoustic guitars. But then, I already think Les Pauls are too big… They are larger than regular classical guitars too:

This pick is showing a dreadnought vs classical bodies, not even concert size....
But true, the only time I could play an Ovation, I did put back on her stand after only a few minutes. Could bear the slipery back in any position. It looks like a lot of people can't bear this bowl bottom, so maybe you should find one guitar of this type and give it a try before to order.... But nothing special to say about the body size, bowl or classic, the feeling is the same. Although opposite to LeoThunder I have no problem playing my dreadnought, with the body size. Of course it's way bigger than any solidbody. But is is way lighter too, and the comfort is more an affair of body shape

I like this thing:
It's thinner and the pick-up sounds good to me.

Very good demo and the guitar sounds surprisingly well.I had always watched her as a cheapo because its top that doesn't look very qualitative....this guy proved that I was wrong

I always find this guy's videos very soothing and a complete contrast to the shrieking, "HEYYY GUYS, WHAT'S HAPPENING?!" crowd. I made the mistake of listening without earphones the first time round and wasn't very impressed at all. ALWAYS a big mistake and I should have learned by now to NEVER listen to ANY music through laptop speakers. I thought it sounded very nice and usable at the second listen and quite a nice alternative to a full body depth guitar. Certainly nicer than MANY piezo equipped acoustics. It would be interesting to try it through some distortion, a la Kurt Cobain's unplugged Man Who Sold the World. I wonder how much more likely it would be to feedback than THAT guitar did? There is something of the Formica kitchen top about the look of it for some reason oghkhood but I'd happily receive this as a present though.

I'm less sure about the purely acoustic sound, which feels a little harsh and lacking bass in comparison. So maybe it's not a proper choice for someone who wants an acoustic guitar. I sort of like the straight wooden look too. Not flashy at all, it's not a luxury Gibson, but it has something. Of course, it's still too bloody big…
