Love me do, I wanna hold your hand and the rest I had to endure taught me bugger all. The point I was trying to make is you don't go to German classes if you want to learn Spanish. I wanted to learn blues, I wanted to learn the scales, slide and bending techniques and theory. I was not getting that doing beatles songs, more over I was uninterested, disengaged and ****ed off. I didn't want to strum along and sing, as I was being urged/instructed to do. A happy interested student will learn and be motivated to learn. Now if a were a beatles fan like your good self DefJef I may also think the beatles invented music or in the least influenced every musician or band that came after them. Personally they have never been an act that I've wanted to listen to or watch, nevermind try to copy. I get there are beatles fans that love them just like some people love the Shadows, Lonnie Donegan, Des O'connor, The Bay City Rollers etc. My point was not to decry the beatles but merely point out that you need the right teacher. Not one that foists his choices on you, when in reality you are paying him to teach you something you want to learn. But Hey Ho perhaps we should get the government to force all guitar students to learn the beatles as it will no doubt teach them everything they need and should know about music.

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

It seems your teacher was not choosing the right material nor telling you what it was showing you blindwilly3fingers. They sound more like a busker trying to build you a catalogue of strum-along tunes. I'd be peed off with that too if it wasn't what I'd signed up for. As MartinB and I agree, there's not much point in going to a teacher for that. There's so much free material online that you could easily glean that from. I'd much rather go to a teacher and say, "What is this piece of music doing? What is the effect that they are achieving that I love so much?" Obviously there may be a need to take a few steps back in the theory at that point, maybe go back to a simpler tune first to drill that theory in before taking a run up at what that effect that I love is, but at least there's a motivation then to learn that theory which could seem boring and irrelevant otherwise. These are the lightbulb moments that I referred to. The unlocking of certain doors. It's not the approach that a lot of music teachers take though, particularly if they are the kind that are used to getting students to pass grades. I well remember trying to learn from grade books and spending weeks learning 'Three Blind Mice' and 'Me and Bobby McGee'. So many hours spent learning to play tunes I hated and would never play again once I'd mastered them. Shame they weren't songs I liked instead.

It was obvious my teacher had had no formal training. Even though my lessons where in a guitar/music shop. I'm not going to slagg the guy off, quite the opposite actually. He was/is a nice bloke, who can play guitar well, was in bands in his younger years.
His lessons however at the beginning were good all the basic bits covered. But after that it was a strum along sing along out of a chord book. Now he was very helpful at first with helping me to find alternate ways to finger chords etc. He would give me chord fingerings to practice at home etc.
There was no structure to his lessons, without using boring educational terms there was no planning, goals or objectives. Unless you count opening the beatles song book and picking a tune for the day/lesson. Even though I would regularly ask for theory none was ever forthcoming.
I should have possibly spoke up more vigorously but I really couldn't see it doing any good. I would say he was around 70ish, not that age has any bearing. He was obviously retired but working in the shop and giving lessons, if this was to earn a few quid or as something to keep him busy fair play.
At first I took all the beatles stuff as material to learn strumming and chord progression. But it became more annoying the more he tried to slip their material in that was covered by others. And did he really think I wouldn't know?
Now I went to the local guitar shop as I thought that would probably be the best place to get lessons. To be fair I knew within the first couple of lessons that there was never going to be any structure or plan. I was OK with this as I would set myself goals and targets. The longer my lessons went the more I started to think I'm paying for something I can get by jamming with friends. By going the friends route I was learning more and actually enjoying what we were attempting to play. I may well have got there in the end strumming along to beatles songs. That unfortunately would have done little for my demeanour and could possibly have affected my disposition and personality.
I will at some point have more lessons but will do a proper reccy on the tutor I choose this time.

At least they both sold pretty quick. He offered me £45 (I had reduced the asking price to £50) Very happy with that, already got it in the post office.
