Sounds like the nut slot is too deep. I had that problem with an old guitar and put a piece of wood in the nut slot - cheap fix that worked alright

So I just put in a set of 12-54 strings (but kept in D-standard) and the buzz has decreased a lot, but it still doesn't sound great. It also doesn't vibrate half as much as the other strings. I'll tune it to E-standard now, see how that goes.

Buzzing on the open string probably does mean the nut slot is too deep. A quick test is to press between frets 2 & 3 - there should now be a tiny gap between the string and fret 1. If the string is touching fret 1, the nut slot is too deep. Putting a bit of paper in the nut slot (as DefJef suggests) will also tell you if that is the problem.

My temporary and quick and cheap fix was to put part of a wooden match into the nut slot. I'm no audiophile but it seemed to work OK

Thanks, yeah, I did see that, but that's for when it's not cut deep enough though, right?

Yep for when you are filing the slot in the first place. If it really does seem to be the nut slot too low then a great tip I got from Dan Erlewine's book, and this only works if you have plenty of spare nut ABOVE the string slots, is to sand down some of that nut, collect the sandings and pack it back into the offending slot with some Superglue using a cocktail stick (you're bound to have some left over from one of you soirees). It dries as hard as the original nut and, when dry, can be re-filed to the right depth - maybe using oghkhood 's tip this time so it doesn't go too low again. Fascinating Well, I'll see what I can do. I gotta tune it to E and see how it goes then. Perhaps just leave it there and tune another to D

I like your thinking marit . A perfect excuse for another guitar. I needed one to justify my Hummingbird so told myself I would now use my Tanglewood as a permanently set up slide guitar using this over the nut. We'll see how that goes! Yes, I like my thinking too, DefJef. Mmm very nice, you can play in our band and play the slide on Old Man and stuff!
