My hybrid has a 12ax7 in the pre-amp and a SS power section. In order for the amp to break up I have to engage a gain button first then dial in how much gain I want by adjusting a gain knob. When the gain button is off the amp stays SS clean with the volume all the way up. The funny thing is I bought it second hand for £35 around 2003 foolishly assuming it was a class A valve amp by its deviant name - Kustom Tube 12A. What a bargain eh? It wasn't until a year or two later when I started using the Internet that I realised this amps's great sounding clean channel was in fact solid state. The gain channel sounds OK till 10 o clock then starts to get muddy so I rarely take advantage of the solitary tube in the pre amp because the clean channel takes pedals really well and to me sounds better. So yeah I can confirm hybrids with valves in the pre amp can be a bit of a dogs breakfast but still taste great where you least expect it.
