Decided to do a demo on Soundcloud about Nashville tuning for anyone who fancies giving it a try. Nashville tuning is simply the lighter bottom E A D and G strings from a 12 string left on and all the pairs removed leaving you with an oddly strung but standard tuned 6 string that doesn't require you to learn any new fingerings. The final example has 6 string standard tuning panned a little left and Nashville tuning panned a little right:

Well gosh you have a nice voice/accent. What was it about though? ;-) Nice playing and for the informative soundcloud :-)
For some reason I always thought Nashville had something to do with Neil Young, so I just googled but I think I was confused as Nashville is also a town in America and he's played there. Doh.

What was it about? What was it about? Oh woe is me, my lesson has failed. It was about 7:22 of baffling wafflery.

From 5:33 , I can get that effect with the TC Sub'n'Up I mean it has 1 Up and 2 sub octaves and a Dry knob I too like your voice man, almost like David Attenborough but for the Music World

I was talking through a Sub'n'Up. I normally sound like a Smurf.

When did you get the Sub'n'Up papache. I saw blablas recommend one. Funnily enough I was looking at a Behringer Ultra Shifter/Harmonist because I liked a lot of the things it would do. Especially the fact that it would take an expression pedal so you could use it like a whammy. Unfortunately my experience of Behringers has been that, whilst they are packed with excellent extra features (the tremolo pan one was brilliant for this) they always seem to have too much underlying hiss.

Oh, didn't get it just yet sorry for the confusion caused! Im trying to convince myself to buy it end of February ... but myself is saying that the ST-62 is basically the same price so why give so much money for a pedal box when I can get another guitar ... or maybe the MS-60VW or mayebe the TE-30 ... ... I should invest money into a pedal like Sub'n'Up and maybe even Carcosa Fuzz from Digitech which seems very versatile. I have enough guitars for now.

Making HUGE presumptions about your style of playing I reckon you will love a TE30/52. Less certain that the MS60 VW will be your thing. You might even find that once you've got a TE that you won't need any more guitars... ... . What am I saying? Everyone needs more guitars.

I enjoyed your demo. Very interesting tuning. Actually my first acoustic was a 12 string I converted to 6 string. (and righty to lefty too). It was never great. I still have it and recently restored it back to right handed 12 string. Looking to give it away now actually.

@defjef you can never tell! Look at what Johnny Marr said about him finding the Jaguar He then found that using tremolo was just part of "his sound". Until that tremolo he didn't even know that it was part of him. I have to try it ... but am worried about that 41mm nut my fingers are bit on the fat side.

I don't find the string spacing on the MS 60 noticeably difficult.

You're probably aware of this already DefJef, if not have you tried lighter plectrums like .73 or below as they work really well for picking and evening out string attack on the 12. Playing bluesy open tunings with a light gauge thumb pick and a slide may be easier than fingerpicking chords in standard tuning also if you haven't already tried it. Here's an example of how easy open tunings can be Apologies if the link doesn't show.....posted from my iPad

Hi Djangle . Yep I did use .73 and .50 plecs (nothing else seemed to work at all) but the problem seemed to be the extremely close spacing allowing little chance of accurate picking and I couldn't dig in enough with them. I tried thumb and finger picks but there was little room to fit them in between the strings and all I got was the sound of castanets as my picks clacked against each other. In the end strumming seemed to be my only option. I did wonder about trying stringing it the Rickenbacker and Brian May way with the pairs reversed (heavy gauge then light rather than the usual light gauge then heavy) but, in the end it was all lost on me and, rather like James Youman on Zappa's Sleep Dirt, "...my fingers got stuck."
