I have the Zoom B3, which is nothing like your Boss but it is sort of the same thing.
As with just about any multieffects pedal, the distortions are not great, especially when solo'd. Once they are in a mix, the digital sound sort of goes away.
I have added a couple of dirt pedals (yes, as much as I hate dirt) to do those jobs, but the B3 is staying for the sheer practicality of it. The delays, echos, reverbs, and even the amp/cab sims make this device more than worth it.
I just ordered a G1on for travel purposes as it is lighter and smaller than the B3 and I only really need a preamp and a bit of reverb for the Uke, but it is great to have sounds to experiment with, even if you end up buying a specific pedal to get "that tone" later on.
I am not sure if I will get on with the G1on, as it is more patch based than the B3 (which is more like three stomp boxes in a row), but I can't see how it could not be worth the 45€, even if I only use it as a headphone amp.

I have a G1on and a B1Xon too and most of the time I use them for a single effect* (not a patch consisting of multiples) - although I admit the looper and drumkit ae handy practise tools as well. The B1xon has an expression pedal which you can tie to practically any virtual knob in any effect....loads of experimental goodness (e.g change the feedback setting on the Carbon Copy delay with the footpedal....nifty!)
Main problem with the G1on and B1on are the flimsy construction - be careful with the connection points - I snapped off the usb connector on the B1on and the signal in on my G1on is starting to go dodgy too.
*The particle verb and the MojoMojo Roller effects are especially nice as are some of the delays.
I'm looking for a secondhand MS-70CDR at the moment. The MS-50 is nice too. Last year Zoom made every effect patch available for those in a firmware update.

I just received the G1on, I will give it a whirl and opine in a seperate thread so as not to derail this one any more than it already is.
Regarding the MS's, I never really got one as I had the B3 and three slots is enough for what I need from it. I would love the MS-50 if it had USB (I/O) and DI.

At risk of proceeding too far down the zoom rails the MS-70CDR appeals to me because it has stereo in as well as stereo out. No idea what I'd use stereo in for though.

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

True..I must read up on the specs though as it would need to retain the channel separation even for 'mono' effects.

The Zoom has a noise reduction sim which actually works quite well, although it does take up one slot.
Although, I haven't really had any issues with noise recording as I usually stay away from noisy amp and preamp sims.
Do you have any "general" settings on the Boss?
Maybe by increasing level and dropping gain somewhere you could reduce the issue?

I have had a play around with the G1on, it's a little weird in a few ways, I'll see what I think when I've used it more. So, this is my new "travel rig"

Can be powered via the USB connection from a regular phone charger too ..just in case you are not aware of that.

I never found the user interface to be too much trouble. It's fairly graphical...not too menu based so nice enough. These things are a matter of taste anyway. I would prefer a few more physical knobs though..
Also I saw a Zoom G3 in use on TV last night - on the really wonderful BBC4 documentary by Charles Hazlewood about minimalist music. First BBC appearance ever by LaMonte Young!
The Zoom turned up during a few snippets of a performance of Terry Reilly's 'In-C' by Hazlewood and Adrian Utley (Portishead) and a couple of other guys on combo organs.
