For the flatwound sound, you can also stick a piece of foam under the strings at the bridge, especially while they are very new and bright. Great idea about foam under the strings, thanks!! It's the Motown way. Check out Carole Kaye. She always plays with a foam mute and picks with a plectrum near the end of the fretboard. And don't forget, the P bass was designed to have one...it just didn't work so well.

If I get this Shorty at some stage will also order those Uke plectrums which are made of felt I think. A bit tired of Trio bass not being able to learn my new riff idea
