Thanks for the insight. I think I'll maybe steer clear of the ST-90 then. Sounds like the ST-62 may be the one for me!
Then again, the ST-70 models have finishes that are really tempting me even though it seems to be broadly an identical guitar. Might need to buy both...

The ST70 Paisley (name ? ) I had and returned the thing immediately ! That was THE worst HB i ever had; neck-body-bridge totaly misaligned!
Other reviews praise this guitar however. It's a bit like lottery when buying HB as of late. But when you get a playable one its a deffinitive keeper!

This is the thing that worries me; it sounds like quality control is all over the place at the minute. It's hard to compare guitars because everyone's experience is different with HB; I've seen some suggestions that the ST-90 far outshines the ST-62, and some that say it's garbage. People seem to have had mixed luck with ST-70s as well... may just need to order one and see I suppose, and return if it's bad. It's like the more I read the murkier the picture becomes!

Yes a very murky picture that becomes extremely shiny when you get a good guitar and you see how much a Fender or PRS or Gibson equivalent costs Happy hunting!

That's a good way to put it. Will give the returns policy a read over and then have a punt I think!
Merry Christmas all and thanks for your help

Fully understand your thoughts on the ST-90SA pickguard, it is horrible! I did buy another pickguard on the quite natural thought that a HB pickguard would fit a HB guitar - ....er.... NO! .... not even close! Apart fron the PG, it is a fantastic strat with no issues in build or initial set up. I have since swapped out the PUs as I found the Wilkinsons to be somewhat thin sounding. I fitted Fishman Fluence single width, as they are called, .... and yes, nearly twice the price of the guitar, but that guitar is deserving of them is all I can say!

Hey Derro, thanks for your take on the ST-90. I am a bit put off by the pickguard, it seems like a weird thing to be a dealbreaker but it sort of is for me. I'm leaning back toward an ST-62 just for sheer simplicity, and much cheaper than others too

St-20 is a good buy too if you get a good one. Certainly its an excellent upgrade platform. Small frets and thinn-ish C shape neck if that what you like (many dont).
I would warrant that most of the price difference between the ST-20 and ST-62 are the Roswell pickups.
In any case - if you don't care about cosmetic stuff (blemishes and small dents) then a B-stock is generally a better option - as it has passed through a significantly greater number of eyes before it gets to you so is less likely to have serious playability impacting issues). Returned items with serious playability issues get classed as decorative items only.

I would warrant that most of the price difference between the ST-20 and ST-62 are the Roswell pickups. The last ST-20 in White I've bought was a disaster! The frets were falling out! I had to take them out and then glue them back in! I bought it so I could mod the thing to my liking but man what a bad guitar that was! The ST-20 Sunburst I've bought 4 years ago was superb. Sure needed some fret job but other than that the neck is just lovely and the whole guitar resonates really well. ST-62 comes with vintage tuners those with a hole for the strings and they work really well. The neck is just sublime! I am exceptionally happy with mine and nothing could make me part with it! Yes, buying HBs is a bit of a gamble but once you get the keeper axe look at the Brand Name equivalent's and you will be SOOOOO HAPPYYYYYY Guitars for peanuts!

I think just buy a few from China and one's likely to be a decent fit.
