Hm, ... I didn't know KAT 50 had a tiny speaker magnet! That no good! Tiny cermaic magnet will certainly result in thin sound with weak low end! Speaker swap? Then Im up to 300 Eur which would be the cost of Kat 100 or ... Bugera V22 combo

Too much low end may not be a good thing to have, Che, when you want to record it and mix it. I reckon the best thing I did was discover that doughnut mod suggestion. I really found the top too bright and the whole amp far too directional for general use. I couldn't even rehearse with it unless I stood it by my head because the tone I was dialing in was completely hopeless for the rest of the band. That cheap £1 doughnut solved that. I suppose you could look out for a speaker from a 100w version on ebay because someone's bound to have decided to swap it out but I wouldn't start there. I'd start with foam and take a look at how I put mine in. How to get the grille off and put a donut ( doughnut! ) baffle in a Boss Katana!

I'll bet you can find videos on YouTube where somebody either tries adding some extra magnets to the back of a speaker or else tries attaching a wider metal disc to the back to enlarge the magnetic area. On the other hand it may be that the speaker's cone is perfectly matched to the magnet it already has. Try this.

I will do no mods for the first 14 days as you never know if this amp is going back to Mr Thomann!

I do like the idea of something to directly plug into and away you go with some direct recording. Sometimes I can't face the connecting up of amps and interfaces and DAWs so just record via an old Walkman mp3 player and its lousy mic. I'd get something cheaper than that Boss to do it if it worked first time every time. Around £50 would be worth it. The plug and play thing is great with the boss recorder - works first time every time too. The effects are great too although very much skewed torwards metal or rock guitar - haven't found many soulful sounding ones although there are some nice clean sounds and some with just a hint of overdrive. A proper electric guitarist would probably have a great time with it. They pop up on gumtree now and again for around half price. Ii love mine but don't use it enough - was thinking of using it for gigs with an old squier strat that someone gave me but my 2 piece is no more.

It just power handling - 50 watt being less than 100 watt. Cabinet size (and positioning) has more effect on bass response.

I really must try salteedog's advice on connecting the Katana amp to my DAW using the USB first. It annoys me that I can't just do that at the drop of an inspiration at the moment. He's told me the settings and I've saved them. I just can't ever seem to face the wrestle. If it's no wrestle I won't necessarily need anything else. If it's still a conundrum I have this in my Amazon basket for £35. Definitely has line in. So I can record and upload to my DAW where I can get creative with effects if I need to. I must look at reamping too because then I could add Boss effects AFTER recording. But, no doubt, reamping will drive me to drink.

Best of luck getting your Katana software to activate, Che. I forgot what a ball ache it was. Decided to update my software to latest and have given up twice. Things that are supposed to happen don't and the instructions are so bad that you never know when to stop holding something down whilst pressing two other things and using your third hand to plug in a USB cable. If the lights ARE flashing in the correct manner (you know, the lights which are built into the buttons that you can't see because you are pressing them down as instructed) then you can go to an icon that doesn't appear, to drag some files into a folder with your right foot. At that point you may prefer to put the kettle on or simply unplug everything as per the instructions tell you not to do.
What a load of cheese balls.

I will not fuss with anything but the amp itself. If its good enough for me THEN I will decide to keep it (meaning not send it back to thomann) and THEN I will fiddle with software stuffs and giggles I have a funny feeling this amp will go back to Thomann already Monday

Trouble is that you won't be able to set any effects, or even choose the ones you want, without hooking up to the tone studio. I'm really not impressed with that end of things at all despite the enormous tones it will give you access to.
And as for recording via the usb, I've just had a miserable and uninspired time trying to play along to the new Bentonites track. I seem to spend longer fiddling and listening to the effect rather than just inventing. Abort.

The good news is that they just issued another update to fix a couple of small bugs with the V3 software. I think there are a few videos online demonstrating the process. I found it straightforward enough but I agree the instructions could be better. I also recognize that depending on your operating system things may work a bit differently on the PC side. Regarding handheld recorders - I have an older Boss recording unit which has a pile of functions. Unfortunately I cannot manage to get it to connect to a Windows 10 pc to download my recordings so need to dig out an XP machine for that. Which is a pain - hence I rarely use it.

I did this: How to tell the version Please check the version of the system working on your KATANA before downloading the archive file. Turn the POWER switch on while holding down the [ TAP ] button. If the indicators light up as described below, the system is at the latest version. For KATANA-100, KATANA-100/212, or KATANA-HEAD When the [ POWER CONTROL ] switch is adjusted to "0.5W," the indicator for "DELAY/FX" lights up. When the [ POWER CONTROL ] switch is adjusted to "100W," the indicator for "REVERB" lights up.
For KATANA-50 When the [ POWER CONTROL ] switch is adjusted to "0.5W," the indicator for "DELAY/FX" lights up. When the [ POWER CONTROL ] switch is adjusted to "50W," the indicator for "REVERB" lights up. If the indicators light up in a different way than just described, perform an update. When you have finished verifying the version, turn off the power. * Don't perform the update if the product is already up-to-date.and then some of this, but the alleged Katana icon never popped up on screen: Caution when performing the updateNever apply this update data to any product other than the KATANA. This update data may destroy the data or system program of other products.Never power-off your KATANA while the update is in progress! If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the KATANA won't be able to start up in normal operating mode. This will require servicing, so you will need to contact Roland service center near you if this occurs. We regret that we are unable to answer questions regarding the update procedure using this system program. Please perform the update responsibly, following the directions given in this document.Getting the update filePlease open/extract the downloaded "katana_sys_v201.zip" file on your computer to get the two update files named "ROMINFO.TXT" and "KATANARM.BIN" in the "katana_sys_v201" folder.Procedure for the updateCautionYou must not rename the extracted files.Never turn off the KATANA's power while the update is in progress. Otherwise the system program or the KATANA itself may be destroyed. Please install the extracted system program files into your KATANA according to the following procedure.Adjust the [ MASTER ] knob to minimum.* Do not connect the KATANA and the computer yet.Turn the POWER switch on while holding down both the [ CH1 ] and [ PANEL ] Tone Setting buttons. The indicators for the [CH1] ~ [CH4] buttons flash.Connect the computer to the KATANA's USB port by a USB cable. The indicators for the [CH1] through [CH2]/[CH4] buttons stop flashing and stay lighted, and a "BOSS_KATANA" drive appears on the computer screen.Open the BOSS_KATANA icon."Removable Disk (*" may appear instead of the BOSS_KATANA icon.Copy (drag and drop) all the files included in the "katana_sys_v201" folder into the "BOSS_KATANA" icon.* Do not copy the "katana_sys_v201" folder.Disconnect the BOSS_KATANA from the computer. With Windows 10 / Windows 8.1 / Windows 7Right-click on the "BOSS_KATANA" icon in My Computer (or the "Removable Disk (*" icon) and execute "Eject."I guess I could try a YouTube video if it doesn't start with "yo, what's happenin'". The inconvenience is massive though. And still doesn't explain why, having got as far as the Katana icon popping up, it doesn't. And at the end of it all, I still can't get a recordable usb level out of the thing anyway. Unless this update fixes that too.

Ok, thanks @defjef that info was great mate! This amp is going back ASAP, will not even unpack it because of the "Never power-off your KATANA while the update is in progress! If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the KATANA won't be able to start up in normal operating mode. This will require servicing, so you will need to contact Roland service center near you if this occurs."
So you can ruin the entire unit if you loose the electricity during update?!!! Forget about it!!!

@defjef It's just like plugging in a USB drive. Depending on your system it may not pop up as a new drive. But you should see it if you go into File Explorer under 'This PC' Make sure you do the proceeding steps as described though (that puts the Katana processor into the update mode)
Turn the POWER switch on while holding down both the [ CH1 ] and [ PANEL ] Tone Setting buttons. The indicators for the [CH1] ~ [CH4] buttons flash. Connect the computer to the KATANA's USB port by a USB cable. The indicators for the [CH1] through [CH2]/[CH4] buttons stop flashing and stay lighted,
@chedapapa - The instructions apply only if you wish to update the firmware - it's not mandatory and I'd be surprised if there was a firmware update more than once a year going forward anyway. It's not different to any other device with a microprocessor - powering off while loading firmware usually results in the device being left in an unusable state. My Zoom and Digitech pedal all carry that warning too.

Yes but my Digitech never asked to press too many things at once and wait for so many things to flash! Saltee; from you last reply you wrote: Turn the POWER switch on while holding down both the [ CH1 ] and [ PANEL ] Tone Setting buttons. The indicators for the [CH1] ~ [CH4] buttons flash. (while still holding the buttons right? ) ... (AND you still HOLD the same buttons while connecting the computer to KAT right? ) Connect the computer to the KATANA's USB port by a USB cable. (and still hold the same buttons right? then release them to get the bellow "stay lighted" or? ) The indicators for the [CH1] through [CH2]/[CH4] buttons stop flashing and stay lighted, I guess its needed to update the old version as it has bugs and impefcetions and you need that editor too. Dunno, I should have known this aint for me, what have I done!
