Thanks saltee. I'll leave it till tomorrow and approach it fresh. The instructions never tell you when to take your fingers off those buttons but you have to to see if they are flashing. Nothing popped up at all when I plugged in the amp to the usb but, as I was shopping just now, it did just occur to me to go and look for the Katana in the list of drives. I'll do that tomorrow if no icons pop up. Cheers for now.
Then to figure out if it's possible to get an optimal recording level. Also, I can't figure out how to get a mono recording and that's annoying me too. It doesn't seem to be the usual option in my DAW as I normally see it when using my interface. Maybe I'll have to download Asio4all again. I only want to play music. Grumble...

Ah yes, Digitech. That SDRUM loved you to hold this whilst pressing that whilst turning the other and stirring a Pot Noodle. And then hold the same buttons again but this time for a different number of presses or length of time. I definitely can't abide stuff with multifunction buttons or buttons with symbols which represent nothing on Earth (Sony, you're the biggest culprit of that. I have one of your TV remotes and a good third of the buttons seem to be illustrating various forms of plankton).

And all this would not even exist in our lives if there was a decent drummer and bassist to be found !!! Maybe I should have kept my drummer and just change all my riffs from 13/7 to 4/4 and happy days! Why did I insist on such 7/6 or similar time sigs?! Now I have no drummer, no bassist, no singer, no keybaord player, ... No Band this Universe is such a depressing place all these people pressing and holding buttons all day long

It's not as complicated as it sounds. It's the Katana version of holding down F1 when you power up your PC. The minute it starts up you let go of the buttons. You don't hold down any buttons when connecting the cable to the computer.
Any bugs that it fixes are relatively minor (the V3 bug is around changing expression pedal settings) You really only need to upgrade to V3 to get the few extra features. Far from necessary.

Well, I did it...then uninstalled and updated the Tone Studio so it matched. I'm now trying to find any info in the Tone Studio manual that tells me how to record it well via the usb but I can't seem to find anything on it. I'll have to print the ruddy thing out I think. I'm going cross eyed and loopy scrolling through this stuff.
Maybe it's better to not use the usb and use line out instead? Maybe not. Whatever, if it doesn't become clear how to record via this thing soon I will be getting a digital recorder to do stuff instead. This things squeezing any creativity out of me. I can't focus on just creating music. It's like trying to read at a bad party. And, as we know, you don't have to stay at a bad party. You can just leg it home.

Maybe my Kat50 will already be upgraded? Its new from Thomann! No? How will I know which version I have in the amp? I care little about the footswitches. I need no such things. What I would like to use is the Tone Studio just for few tweaks here and therefor effects and new amp sims (Bassman '59).
I will use the Line Out in Stereo (as its ment for Phones) with my Keybaord stereo to 2 x Mono into Interface! But I think micing the amp sounds best!

The tone studio manual isn't much help regarding recording I'm afraid.
Other than the stereo effects (listed in the manual) the output from the Katana via USB is mono. So without reverb or any of those effects the output will be mono.
I checked my previous notes on USB settings and I admit that it's far from intuitive.
My previous conclusions: 'To-Effect' and 'Dry-Out' levels do not seem to make any difference at all. 'Mix Level' seems to adjust the level through the 'headphone/rec-out' when playing back via USB. 'Effect-out' level sets the level of the USB signal for recording. Loop-back allows you to mix all the sound from your computer to the DAW (i.e. a backing track).

If so, there's no urgent need to go to V3. I expect there'll be a sticker on the box showing the version. Otherwise you have to do the flashing light test.
There is no Bassman 59 amp sim. There is a patch (saved setiings) that a lad has made to reproduce the Bassman tones.
Other than the USB out, the Katana is entirely mono. The 50 headphone/rec out (technically not quite the same as a line out) is mono so left channel = right channel.

Thanks saltee. Still struggling to get a decent level. I think the To Effect and Dry Out may be to do with an effects loop? It's all rather baffling really. I don't get that Loop-back at all unless it's something to do with re-amping.
Odd how I can't get my DAW to give me a mono waveform. It appears as a stereo one but both waveforms are the same. This doesn't normally happen and I can usually select a single waveform. Mind you, at the moment, any waveform is a small blessing.

I double checked this and the only thing that seems to make a difference on recorded volume is the volume in the amp - so to boost it you need to max volume or gain (and reduce master volume if necessary....recording signal comes before master vol). I can get good levels but if you are running a weak pickup through the clean channel with not much gain then it's going to be fairly low(you will need to adjust level in the DAW)
Also monitoring through secondary wont work too well as secondary USB feeds in before the preamp and effects. Some use a separate audio interface for monitoring but I think that depends on your pc/asio drivers ability to handle two audio interfaces at one time (the Katana also appears as an audio i/f).

Hmm. I'll try again at the weekend. I must admit I just had a far more creative time at midnight just playing through the amp without usb recording anything. I'm beginning to think it's a bit of a compromise direct recording.

I hear you. The biggest hinderence I have is that I don't have a set-up that has everything in place and ready to go - so when the creative bug hits I dont have to divert into 'engineering' mode.. I've gear that is boxed up awaiting for me to setup space - I've plans to throw out a skip load of kids toys this year in order to reclaim my own territory. Feck it - I need a month off work just to do my own stuff. (People think I'm as odd as hell when I tell them my perfect holiday is two or three weeks at home to do my own projects!)

It would be nice to just switch on and roll but my experience is that, even if I leave my computer all attached to it's interface and ready to roll, by the time I've come back and switched on it's reset an option. Same happens at my mate's studio. We can finish on a Friday, go for a beer, meet up early the next day to catch some nice early morning vocals (I love doing vocals early in the morning) and..."there seems to be a routing issue". By the time the issue's finished I've lost the spark!

and... I've lost the spark! I remember the time my wife and I decided to get a child and she would come to me on "those days" and say "darling its tonight" and me like, damn it, this feel like work! Where is all the Spark gone!? That moment when you just want to grab that guitar and rip it It has to be spontaneous otherwise it feels forced god damn it
