I'm of the opinion that the best Solid State amps were made in early to mid 90's before the amp companies really committed to adding digital (or more specifically modelling) technology to their amps. Modelling algorithms and processors circa 1995 - 2000 were pretty poor in comparison to current standards - in that way they were no different to anything else which requires complex real-time computation to function and which has improved significantly over the years. Certain early 90s Peaveys and Fenders (other brands too I guess) made professional grade SS amplifiers with good cabinets, speakers, power supplies and build quality and many of those can picked up for a song now. I'll admit finding a nice distorted tone on a SS can be tricky. In that regard I'd expect Peaveys are better than Fenders. I'd also second DefJef suggestion to try Orange. They have their own tonality and their solid states and hybrids are well regarded.

There are tons of very good solid state amplifiers available cheap due to the new lightweight trend. Class D amps are the rage, as are the neo magnets, due to the fact that you can get very good results from a lightweight set up. That being said, a distorted SS amp just sounds broken to me

I need your help salteedog DefJef Djangle and anyone else from the UK and Ireland I have found a CUSTOM Sound CUB 30 solid state amp from the 70's or 80's made in UK. I can't find much or any info on these but it looks very similar to the SESSION amps. If you have info on this please tell as Im already talking to the guy. He would deliver it to me as he often travels to the city near me. Its 65 Euros for a 30 watt amp with (I think) a 10" speaker, could be Fane or Celestion (he will check that tonigh for me)

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

I'd be inclined to avoid it if it's 70s/80s and from one of the multitude of UK amplifier companies that were in business at that time. It could be great but is also likely to have dodgy components that may require repair or replacement any day. And good luck finding a schematic for it.

Thanks lads I think I'll pass on it. Of course, there would be more demos on YT if it was any good.

Why did I just spend 20 minutes of my life reading posts by people I have never heard of... about an amplifier that I have never heard of... for an instrument that I never play...
