Thank you DefJef for the detailed conversation regarding transparent things. If only everything was made from polythene bags this would be really close to transparent. I refrained from stating they would clearly be transparent (sorry poor pun) as I was unsure of the opacity of a polythene bag. 🤕 Seriously I learned something, not a lot but something. 😜

Sooo...at risk of diving into this minefield, I've only skimmed over the detail of your conversation but...I always understood 'transparent' to mean essentially a flat EQ. In other words the pedal doesn't add any significant additional layer of EQ to the input signal. And a Tubescreamer is NOT transparent given it boosts the mids more than the highs and lows. But as you have concluded, lots of confusion about this stuff pertains... www.wamplerpedals.com/blog/talking-about-gear/2019/02/transparent-overdrives-are-there-actually-any/

From all the stuff I've read (and it's been a lot in the last week!). The consensus I am finding is transparent is supposedly to allow the the guitar and amps original sound to still be somewhat present and not lost under all the distortion?
To be honest hard clipping, soft clipping, square clipping and asymmetrical clipping not to mention silicon or germanium wim wongs etc blah blah blah. Is making me feel like a tube screamer, I've got the mid hump and lots of smooth highs!
The clean boost is supposedly clean gain with little distortion or colouring. This I find strange as some clean boosters have treble & base? My mosky dec buffer booster is a clone based on the wampler decibel+ and has just a gain/level knob. But I think it still adds a bit of dirt when driving the amp.
I am going to just go by whether I like the sound of the mix of pedals amps etc I use. Bugger the sheep clipping, cafe noir to ground and geraniums over tubes of Dow corning it's too much for me to worry about. I'm going to order a wah pedal and a fultone fulldrive2 clone and I don't care how they are clipped even if it's done by wahl!!!!

I agree.. One can get consumed by all the pseudo-technical crap. All that matters is whether you like the sound or not.

I've ordered a buffer pedal, I probably don't need it depending on who's video or article I look at. Front or back of the effects chain? I'm still not sure where to put it? I've added up all cable length including patch cables and that was hard going with only 3 fingers!
I'll give it a try it's only money!

It can be hard to know where the crunch is coming from, the amp or the pedal? I did some tests last Friday playing my various boosts and overdrives into the effects return so I could isolate them from the amp's preamp tubes and eq. This way I could compare each for how loud they went without clipping and how much they cploured the sound. Naturally the clean boost did this best, barely clipping even when maxed but I was surprised how much the Joyo Vintage Overdrive (Tubescreamer clone) would give me. It made me reassess that pedal's name and possibly its function. I'd always assumed it simulated overdriven tubes but it does indeed seem to be designed to push the actual tubes. My Blackstar HT Dual drive (tube overdrive) was pretty flexible too and being something like 16 volts actually had a lot of headroom before breaking up. That pedal is pretty much a preamp in itself with three band eq so can be set to not affect the amp's eq or else used to boost or reduce the bass, mids and/or highs. Interestingly the OCD which is my go-to overdrive pedal was less flexible at clean boosting. Having discovered all THAT I am now more cognisant of what my pedals are actually doing, so when I plug them back into the front end of my amp I may be able to apply that knowledge a little more for specific purposes. I hope so. I'm getting into this boost into the preamp thing!

The boost is the most constant thing I use DefJef, I do like the klon clone sound but have wish listed a caline crazy cacti (fultone fulldrive 2 clone) on the Mrs Xmas pressie list. I'm interested to see how this dual type pedal sounds and works. I started researching all the guff, moset chips etc then decided I really can't be bothered about all the techy stuff. I'm just going to try it and see if I like it, for someone who only wanted a few basic pedals I'm well into double figures now! I'm pleased your experiments worked out 👍 the tube screamer thing is much similar to what I've researched. I have yet to get a tube screamer or clone of one. Initially that was a pedal I was interested in but I've sort of gone away from that. Do you know what dB your booster is supposed to boost? The wampler one mine is a clone of is claimed to be 20 dB of clean boost. My mosky is not as as loud as the wampler original in comparisons I've researched. It does significantly boost the gain/level so will do for me.

You do like your research DefJef 😀 the clean booster is very good in conjunction with a drive or dirt pedal. The klon type pedals are good on their own but do appear to become magical when stacked with some other drive/dirt pedals. I watched a video recently that hinted that tube screamers are better with single coils and klons better with humbuckers! While there maybe some truth in that I think a klon sounds good with all pups (especially P90's). I cant say much regarding the tube screamers as I haven't used one. I used to give @chedapapa stick for his inexhaustible quest for the cosmic tone. Unfortunately I appear to have become a disciple of the very same cult!
