Hello all, thought some of you might be interested to see what I'm doing with my PB50.
This is the 2nd PB50 I've owned. I bought my first one new from Thomann and was quite happy with it, left it stock, put flatwounds on it only two things I wasn't keen on - the headstock and the pickguard.
Not much I could do about the headstock, I don't have a workshop as such, don't own a bandsaw (no idea how to operate one) and the idea of re-shaping it with a hacksaw was a non starter, I simply lack the skills and would have made a right mess of it.
Then this came up on ebay -
The seller had already reshaped the headstock and had made a fairly good job of "relic-ing" it. They'd also upgraded the bridge, changed the tuners for a set of Squier tuners, put a Fender branded neckplate on it and also a Fender waterslide on the headstock
I covered the pickguard with white Fablon (just think a white guard looks better) and happily gigged with it.
However, times and tastes change.
I've really gone off the whole "relic" look, I feel it's been done to death and I've never been particularly keen on sunburst finishes in the 1st place.
So I decided to strip it down and re-finish it in my favourite colour scheme - surf green with a pearloid pickguard.
Here's the body sanded, filled and painted with primer.
And with its first few coats of paint.
And the (almost) finished item
I bought a sheet of pearloid pickguard material, a friend (who has the tools and the ability to do such things) is cutting a new pickguard for me using the original guard as a template. I'll bung up a picture once it's ready.
Lastly, the headstock decal. I've never been entirely happy with this bass masquerading as a Fender, thought I'd have a bit of fun with it and re-badge as a "Squirt". This amuses me for many reasons.
I seriously considered making a Harley Benton logo for it, but this idea just tickled me.
These are really good basses, I have gigged this one loads and it will be out working with its new look this coming weekend.
