Just like the title says, is it better to buy their standard J bass and upgrade pickups or get the enhanced and possibly upgrade in the future?

Buy the standard JB-20 in sunburst, put a graphite nut on, string some flat wounds on and put a piece of foam under the strings at the bridge. Done. Optional would be some some trad knobs and a black or tort pick guard. Great bass. Oh, and leave the pickups on. See my previous posts about this bass. Sometimes an el cheapo ceramic magnet is what works best. This is one of those cases.

I prefer the JB-75 and blame the pick-ups but maybe it's just the cheap stock strings? The Enhanced is a different model altogether.

Thanks, guys. I’ll go check out the sound samples for both the 20 and 75.

There's better than sound samples:

So the lesson here is that they all sound great with talented players - and probably running through some decent equipment.

I liked the 20, but the 75 killed it.
