Hello, I just received my ST-59HM and try to correct the Pickup Hight on that Guitar. There are many informations on Youtube and forums but, when it was said x-mm to the string, does it mean from the top of the Pickup Cover or the Polepiece? My guitar has Rosswell Picks with some Polepieces lower than the Pickup-Cover. I hope my question is understandable, I am an old man from Germany and my Engish lessons are Long time ago :-). It means from the top of the cover, because most pick-ups are not staggered like those of the ST-59. These figures are just safe guidelines, an average. Your ears and taste are what decides. The closer you get to the strings, the more you lose in clarity while gaining in output level.
A common guideline for "vintage-style" (lower output) pick-ups as those on the ST-59 is to keep the pole pieces on the bass side at 2.4 mm from the strings when fretted high (on the last fret), and the trebble side at 2 mm.
As an aside, the staggering on the ST-59 is complete nonsense because the fretboard has a flat radius and the G string is plain. The staggering was originally designed to follow the 7.25" radius of early Fender and compensate for the thin core of a wound G string. This is why the G and D were so high and the B so low.

hey there, I found this a while ago. It's a really good read on adjusting pickup height. Don't miss out: reverb.com/news/pickup-height-an-easy-diy-tone-tweakMost important thing to note: the rules are NOT set in stone. Let your ears decide what you like best. Personally I like the pickups a bit lower than most other players, to get some extra clarity/openness and sustain.

I agree. You can use your ears. If it gets too close, it will inhibit the string vibration. If that happens, back it off until it doesn't.
