Hey HB friends, does anyone have suggestions for a low gain OD pedal, just to add some hair or sharp edge to a humbucker tone?
The cheaper the better :-) (I used to have a Barber 1/2 gainer that sounded wonderful, but I'm not into expensive boutique gear anymore.) I'm just a bedroom noodler nowadays with limited talent. A cheap chinese clone will do for sure. It's all in the fingers, right? :-)
I already have a Bad Monkey and a Boss SD-1, but while I love those as a boost for hi-gain amp tones, I don't really care for their own overdrive voices in a lo-gain context. They colour the guitar sound way too much, with overtly warm mids and loss of clarity.
Any suggestions? Thanx in advance!
PS: I had borrowed an OCD a while ago from a friend, but I didn't like it too much. Feels so "stiff" when playing. Far too expensive too.

Not really Shure I know of anything that fits what you're after? Sounds like you want a transparent OD with no gain? I use a cheap klon clone which supposedly doesn't colour the sound of the amp or guitar? It can be used as a boost/treble boost, it has a fairly wide range. As DefJef mentioned a clean boost pedal may be the way to go? Tbh I don't like a lot od/distortion and prefer just a bit of crunch sort of edge of break up sound.. Only thing I can say is cheap Chinese clone pedals are the way I find the sound/effect I like. Like a lot of cheap stuff now they are pretty good. Instead of spending £150 on 1 pedal you can try 7-10 Chinese clones. 😯 If you can find a pedal you like there are usually a few clones of it. Most blatantly state what they are a copy of. Sorry I can't help you more. 😒

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

I was looking at the NEO Drive In which seemed very flexible a little while back and remember coming across this pedal that seemed interesting. Check out the sounds on this LINK. Nice review here.

I looked into the mojomojo before going for a klon clone. I found it described as a cranked Marshall simulator to an ocd type clone etc. There are several demos of it vs other drives. I was put off by reports of it not being transparent. As you know DefJef from our discussion on transparent ODs it's a fairly misleading or should I say controversial area? I did read it was supposedly low gain but as with most demos you see on yt its hard to know.

Exactly my thought blindwilly3fingers , a lot of these cheapo clones make musicians on a budget really happy. Rowin, Mooer, Joyo, Donner, etc... they all make cool stuff that sounds GREAT. My Rowin Big Muff clone is my favourite muff sound ever. A Klon clone?? Hey, that might be a splendid idea. I've never played a real Klon Centaur, but judging from reviews and YT sound snippets, this type of circuit might be the ticket for the sound I'm after. I'm not really after a "fatter" or meatier tone, just some slight dirtiness to give certain riffs that snotty edge. With good note separation and no muddiness. (You could kind of compare it to the tonal behaviour of a semi-clean/slightly crunchy Vox AC30).

On a sidenote: a while ago I demoed a Nobels ODR-1, which is known for it's transparency (that means neutral EQ, right?). Well, that was a huge disappointment to me. I found its tone unnecesarily harsh and unmusical. Makes me seriously wonder why Nashville/alt-country studio musicians are so fond of it...?

I went down the rabbit hole trying to find a "transparent" OD. Watched tons of video on hard clipping, soft clipping, diodes etc. Tbh most of it went over my head 🤕 while I understand the clipping /waveforms, a lot of the rest of it was too techy and boring. For what it's worth the klon circuit is basically hard clipping but the diodes etc used make it appear not like a hard clipped circuit? Confusing I know but it does offer a good range from clean to dirty tone. I bought a cheap mosky silver horse. There's a thread on it DefJef and myself waffle on about transparent drives etc. When I was looking into it I narrowed it down to either a klon clone or a timmy clone. I'm pretty happy with the klon clone, I would have tried a timmy clone next if the klon was not to my liking. The timmy clones are again supposedly very versatile. It's bit of a minefield as you probably know @coldwar1977. Good luck I hope you find something that fits what your after. 👍

The Joyo AC tone is great for getting a "snappy" clean humbucker tone but obviously it will colour the amp tone so this is probably useless advice unless you're partial to a voxish voicing.

I know I have less strings and they are fatter but I also use the American Sound when not using an amp, I set it so it doesn't distort but just warms the edges (if that makes any sense).
