Good day,
I have always been a Fender guy and never owned a HB and never held in my hand. For variety, I would like to add a gibson-style guitar to the stable.
Obviously, I am not able to try to either (unless I order both and return one). I seem to be unable to decide.
What is important for me is to get a good playing guitar and one which has a "premium" feel. I don't care about finish, as much as finesse in playability.
The simplicity and colour of the DC junior is rather appealing and it for some reason implies that it is higher quality as it's Indonesian made and is "less" for "more money". There are endless rave reviews on youtube and some have said "it is on another level for HB" and "made in the same factory as more famous brands". (I take this with a grain of salt, because many of the reviewes are affiliated with Thomann)
Yet on this forum, I get the sense that many users have said DC Junior is not spectacular at all and that a similarly priced SC Custom is actually much better.
Can someone advise which would be a safer bet?

I haven't played the DC Junior but I can highly recommend the SC-Custom. Guitars from many companies are made in the same factories but they are made to different specifications so the "made in the same factory" means something but it's not a guarantee of too much IMHO. I would order both and return one. Or neither

I have an SC-Custom and an SC-Jr (not very different from the DC-Jr)-
Price for price, the SC-Custom is simply a superior build in most ways (at least based on the examples I own). I'm not dishing on the Jr, so much as opining that the Custom punches well above its price point - more so than the Jr. The fit and finish on the custom is better, and little things like the grover tuners are a nice bonus.
However - they are both excellent guitars. I bought the Jr because I wanted something with a P90. If you're not concerned about a little extra weight and P90s aren't a requirement, I would go for the Custom.
Price for price, if I had to choose one, it would be the Custom every time.

I have "real" Gibson DC Jr and a Chinese knock off from a less than Thomann Firewood brand. Not impressed with that brand. I recently ordered a Thomann DC Jr since it has much better reviews than the Firewood brands. The Jr style has a certain appeal that you may like. It is lighter than a LP and has a tone of its own. I have to many LP's from more sources than I can recall at the moment so I don't dislike the SC LP style. There are good ones and bad ones of those like anything else. You probably should have both or will end up with both planned or not.. Trust me it happens.. The SC/LP style is more mainstream in many ways. Right now with shipping being extra cost and slow its not going to be the best time to order. If you have to pay for the shipping and Thomann will ship several for the same price get one of each. I expect you will later anyway. Save a few bucks on shipping and get the double tap order. You will get both for the price of a lower priced Epiphone and have two great guitars.

You may find it interesting to read up on the history of the DC Les Paul. The Les Paul Jr and the birth of the SG. There are some that think the DC is a copy of a PRS. Nope. Everything old is new again at some point. There is also a discussion of the neck joint of the SC being stiffer than DC that goes back to the late 50's and early 60's. You can read up while waiting on delivery..
