I play mainly blues, heavy rock and classic heavy metal. I don't do death metal, djent, Norwegian operatic symphonic nose flute pirate folk metal or any of those other weird niche genres!
I'm looking for a budget brand preferably but used is fine too. I've found a Kokko Compressoe (Ross clone> for £13-14 on AliExpress) which sounds like a good deal but I've no idea if it's a decent pedal.

I have a kokko mini pedal compressor which is supposed to be a dynacomp clone . It has 3 knobs attack, sustain and level. Its a good cheap option that does what a compressor should do. I'm happy with it, I can't say if it would be suitable for a serious/gigging muscian? It's doesn't produce any unwanted noise and works fine with other pedals. I don't know if it's the same one your looking at Donut?

Yeah that's the one I have I paid £18 for it about 10-12 months ago. Tbh I can only compare it to compressors on a multi effects unit. I'm not terribly good at using techy talk regarding compression all I can say is it levels the peaks and troughs with picky stuff well. Obviously the sustain can be adjusted to suit riffy stuff. Sorry Donut for the poor quality vocabulary used. 🙄

It does that for me with hammer ons and pull offs on blusey rhythms/riffs. I don't do a lot of solos when I do their usually short and bendy. 🤥
Tbh I just wanted a basic compressor to level dynamics (hope that's correct terminology). I was pleasantly surprised how well it works.

those Kokko pedals sound pretty good. excellent value for money. go for it! There's a couple of Marshall Edward the Compressor pedals on eBay which finish soon. If I don't get one of those then I'll be ordering the Kokko. I have Marshall Guv'nor 2+ and a Marshall DFX so maybe they'll go together nicely. The Marshall pedals are built like a tank too. After that, I think my next pedal will be a dedicated wah pedal instead of just using an expression pedal with my Katana.

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

No I've not found much that tempts me below that sort of price Donut...and that price isn't very tempting either for a pedal that I'm not sure I want! I did wonder about this much cheaper Joyo one with a mix/blend knob, but now doesn't seem to be a good time to source cheap Chinese things in the UK. I suspect that, after my experiences, this is one type of pedal I may not be best to cut corners on.

I suspect that, after my experiences, this is one type of pedal I may not be best to cut corners on. Pretty sure I saw a review of that a while back and the reports were positive. I had the JF-315 Metalhead from the same Ironman range and it was built like a tank, but it only did one sound that was any good so it went back.
I ended up with an Marshall Ed the Compressor and so far I'm happy with it. I haven't quite figured out the EQ setting knob yet; I've played about with it but couldn't hear any difference!
If I ever get round to building some pedals then the Xotic SP and the Wampler Ego might be ones I build.

I was going to go for a CKK Gears one today but they seem to have stopped making them! That's not a brand I've ever heard much about. I did find this today, there's no way I would have thought a compressor by TC Electronics would be this cheap:
EDIT: It's based on the Behringer clone of the Ibanez CL9 apparently.
