The order I use and always fall back on after experimenting: Compressor - Chorus - Delay - overdrive. And in the past when I also used a flanger this used to be between the chorus and delay.

Overdrive at the end of the chain ok I have learned something new today I thought that Overdrive/Distortion is at the beginning as a "rule" , guess rules are there to be broken. Thanks for sharing!

I guess my previous post wasn't very helpful The order I usually use the 3 spots of the B3 is: Compressor- Preamp - Amp Although most of the time I don't switch the compressor on, at least for practice, so I mainly use the pedalfor its amp sims. When I do (or did) use heavy effects, mainly for dubstep, I use effects on my laptop.

Overdrive makes a mess of everything so why bother to put it at the beginning of the chain. This order is how I like the sound the most, I go by ear not by what's the rule.

I use effects on my laptop. Sorry I was not clear in my initial post above (now edited) I meant a pedal chain in front of an amp not into DAW, like more for live setting. Im looking to start buying some pedals in case my new project of turning the HB CG-15 amp into a head and buying one 15" bass speaker for it (practice gear). So my plan was; Bass guitar - Behringer Bass Preamp - Compressor - ... and whatever else I go for after ... - CG15 head- into 15" bass speaker Harley Benton 15TB065-B4 into a cab (one I have at home)

So its easier to control the overdrive after the FX chain. Good to know. At least I now know about that possibility also. Will test and see how it sounds.

I do use my laptop in a live setting, with a foot controller for the laptop. So basically I go: Bass > Zoom B3 > Laptop > Zoom B3 > Amp or DI

As I see it [for guitar and bass]:
Compressor 1 - tuner - Synth effects - Pitch Shifters - Dynamics - Dirt 1,2,3... - Noise Gate - Compressor 2 - Pre Amp - Volume pedal - Tremolo - Modulations - Delay - Reverb
* some tuners read better with a compressor before them and any Synth and Pitch Shifter will also track better. * 2 compressors is a good idea for when you want one before dirt and one after it. Different places in the chain get different results. Also good to add a compressor at the end of a chain to level the entire signal. * Volume pedal after dirt but before modulations and delay to do the volume swells with trails * there are no rules for pedal chains. But there are some guidelines that help to put things in context.
EDIT:
It will also depend if the amp has FX Loop. Generally compressor, tuner, synth, pitch shifters, Dynamics and Dirt gos strait into the amp, the FX Loop takes care of the rest

Thanks man! I think one will loose lots of dynamics with so many compressors , no? Maybe 2-3 compressors in the chain good for trash metal sound
