considering that there were very few pedals made specifically for bass up until a certain point, bassists would use whatever they could get their hands on.
I always used my guitar effects on bass, no problem. Some even sound better than with guitar [flangers, chorus...]

Some work well, some don’t. The lack of blending in your clean bass tone could be a problem - especially with overdrive effects. I use a TC Electronic Mojomojo guitar overdrive with my bass, and it works great. A regular Ibanez Tube Screamer for guitar didn’t work for me. Still thinking of getting the HB Vintage Overdrive, and see If it can be modded to work with bass
