Only you know what kind of music/sound you like to play. Tell us more about that and we might give more suggestions. I like Green Day, Nirvana, Guns n Roses, The Rasmus, Linkin Park, Muse, Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Mostly alternative rock. Damn... that's all sort of different gear right there. Just for Muse and RHCP they use everything they can put their hands on and a kitchen sink. I recommend as a basic sound set for general mood: Fuzz, medium to high gain overdrive and chorus. Each will depend of what kind of Fuzz, OD and Chorus sound you like, so I guess either you go to a store and try as many of them as you can or check youtube videos demoing them [or both].

Extremely good value @ 99USD (can be had for less, but that is naughty). Naughty is good.

Has the OP thought about turning his computer in to an amp? I downloaded Revalver 4 today and it can reproduce many different amps, cabs and pedals, a virtually unlimited choice of sounds. Extremely good value @ 99USD (can be had for less, but that is naughty). This is the first time I have managed to get an amp simulator working on my computer, and I am super impressed. Have a look at Rocksmith
