I have bought 3 alnico no-name Chinese single coil pups and I love how they sound especially on their own (not so much 2nd and 4th position). I just wonder how come the neck pup sounds louder than the middle and bridge pups? Is this normal for vintage pickups of the older days? I did read somewhere at some time about this but forgot where. Any info on this would be great! I know bass neck pup is louder than the bridge pup (which was surprising for me because I always though bridge pup is the loudest)

Pickup height will affect the volume. There are different schools of thought about how to set-up strat pickup height but like everything else will boil down to personal preference. Personally I've found good success with the approach of setting the middle and neck pickups so that the strat positions 2 and 4 'quack' is emphasized. Where did you get the cheapo alnico pups? I'm thinking of buying a set for my ST-20.

I screwed the earth wire behind the tremolo claw I hate soldering that thing because it takes huge amount of time to heat up the trem claw (name?) But I do solder to the input jack (connect shoes is a way to go thanks for the tip). I will at some stage buy the 7 way harness with proper pots and all. I will get the one with no-solder option for quick pickup change. Need money which I dont have now

Great deal alright. Pre-wired pickguard is no good for Lefty me but even to take the pups out, it's still good value. Is it traditional strat wiring or does the first tone knob connect to the bridge pickup too ? (I've made that mod on my ST-20 - without it the bridge was far too ice-picky).

The wiring is as follows; Bridge and Middle share the Tone pot, Neck has its own Tone pot. Volume is for all 3 pups. So not like a strat but I wouldnt worry about that because I think these pups are good sounding and deserve proper large pots and even a 7 way switch There is a cheap one on ebay prewired harness and is solderless for easy pickup switching.

Hmmm...I'm very tempted to buy that same set you bought. I'll have to disassemble it but I do have a spare black pickguard I was going to use to do a Gilmore job on my black strat.

Nice but I'm not too bothered about 7 way switching...not for eur50+ anyway. ...but I just bought the prewired pickguard. Ebay makes it too easy! This GAS never subsides Thanks for the link to it!

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

That is unusual to have tone control on the bridge at all. Nice little touch. Saves me having to do it.
