I'm thinking about picking up a JB-75LH bass. This would be my first bass and was wondering if a bass amp was necessary or if a guitar amp would work ok. I know it would probably depend on the amp so I'm talking in general.

Should work without any problems but don't expect it to go as loud as with a guitar attached.

If Im not mistaking Lemmy (RIP) played bass into guitar Marshall amps. But then again so do guitar players use Fender Bassman which is a bass amp.
I play my bass via me NUX-200 modeler pedal (into headphones) using the Fender Bassman amp sim and it sounds awesome to my ear (also use this to record bass now)

In general yes it will work OK, especially the JB75 as the pup's are low enough output, so less risk of damaging the speaker. Just be sensible and start low volume and work your way up to the sweet spot. Personally I sweep each pot from left to right until you just hear the volume swell (not just the vol and gain pots the tone too) if that makes sense
