Well, I never thought I would post asking for advice on guitar effects, but here I am ( papache you can kill me now ) I am planning on trying out some new stuff for which I will need a few guitar effects. I don't need anything special, just some chorus, wah, a little bit of grind/overdrive (nothing serious) etc. I was thinking about something along the lines of the Zoom G1Xon or similar. I use the B3 for bass and like it, but I didn't like the B1on, mainly due to it feeling like a plastic toy. It will mainly be for blues, funk and some light rock. So, what do you recommend?

Never say never ... If its for recording I would go with the pedal that can produce very clean (I mean without hiss/hum) tone. I only had the B1on and in comparison to the Digitech RP multi processor failed big time. The Digitech tones are so much more Hi-fi and clean. I hate Noise Gates on any other pedal I had but on the Digitech RP . If you go for maximum 93 on the Noise Gate (starts from 90) t will not cut the signal like other noise gates do butyou get clean signal path, no hiss no hum! The clean Fender amp sims are just awesome! But use the Digitech's own clean amp setting not the Fender, imo. Again Digitech's high gain setting is awesome for Lead playing. I think they nailed their own amp settings better than the wanna be settings Even the drum (loops) section is of VERY good quality compared to NUX MG200 and the B1on. I see now that Thomann doesnt have the RP with pedal anymore but they do have the newer Digitech Element with pedal which is the same deal as RP just easier to get around. Oh and if you do go with Digitech forget about using the Compressor it introduces much noise. I find that I never needed a compressor on my guitars with the RP anyway.

I have the B1on and the G1on and never noticed any hiss or noise from them except on high gain patches. I like the effects on them. I do agree the build quality is flimsy though. I broke the usb connection on my B1on after stepping on it accidentally. I dismantled it and wasnt impressed with the way the innards were put together.
I do like the look of the standalone zoom MS-70 though.

I just remembered that my brother in law has an old Digitech RP50 in a drawer somewhere (and an HB guitar that he has never played ) Is it worth me actually spending time on going to his place to dig it out, or should I not even bother?

Digitech have a decent rep
I have only had one of their pedals, it was an old digital delay, really good value for money.

I'm only 5 days too late Actually, I only really need something simple, to give a Piccolo bass a bit of a guitar sound.

Just found a Zoom GFX 5 for 40 quid. Despite my previous experience of a Zoom 2020 mfx I know you said things have improved immeasurably with them since the horrible eighties. I'm very tempted. What's not to like salteedog ? Hmm..I'm not at all familiar with this one. The big red LED display indicates this might be an older unit - earlier than say 2012 - and if so I would avoid as the processor is likely to be an older variety. If I were you I'd keep an eye out for a Zoom-G3 or G5 which has the next generation of processor. The ones with the expression pedals in particular are very versatile. The standalone fx pedals MS50 and MS70 are good too. My rule of thumb is to ignore the amp sims on these things and focus on the effects only (although there are no sims on the MS-70 so I like that).

There's one for sale over this side of the Irish sea for €40 too. I would avoid it.

I just ordered a Line 6 M5 multi modeller from Gear4Music. Not for its OD/Distortion sounds of course as those have got very bad reviews (as per usual with these modelling boxes)ut for its Modulation and Filters but also as extra Delays and Reverbs which its known for. Im more than happy with my current main tone that CKK Lunar Drive, CKK Gears, Mooer Reecho Pro and Marine Layer give me, but am in need for more modelling sounds and my budget is poor so multi FX was the best option. I researched a lot and find this guy very honest. He has all 3 models , the M5, M9 and M13 and likes them all depending on what board he is using. I really dig his taste for tone and this Line 6 modeller sure sounds good in his demo

The M5 is really good imo, did you go for an expression pedal too?
