Hey guys! I open this thread right now, because I have some questions about the HB DIY Kits (or working with guitars and wood in general).
I'm planning to buy a SG-DIY-Kit in August. I might end up with the HB Kit, if the money isn't enough for a ML-Factory SG Mahogany Kit or it's still out of stock.. (the ML one is 199€, HB is 99€ I believe..)
I'd rather prefer the Mahogany Kit, but since I'm not a professional and more likely a just-for-fun-guitarist and GAS-suffering person ( ) the HB Kit might do it as well. (Also I'm posting here, because some of you might have knowledge in working with wood!)
I would want to stain the wood. I know the HB Kits have something on them so I'd have to sand that down before staining the wood..
The other idea was to buy a HB S600 VI (Mahogany Body, glued neck) remove the paint and use this as a base... Do you think this os a godd/better idea than waiting for the ML-Mahogany-Kit or just buying the HB-Kit?
I want to sand the body and put a "branding" on it. I'll use a special soldering iron tu burn the pattern into the guitars wood. The wood itself will be stained and finished off with a clear paint.
Example:
Here are the questions:
Should I stain the wood before or after branding in the pattern? I myself would stain it, let it dry, brand it, slightly sand it and then finish it with a high gloss clear paint (I read about this technique and it said that dull paints can "remove" the painting or make it look ugly, that's why I'd go for high gloss)
Will the wet stain remove my painting or make it blurry?
Can I leave the guitar like this if I sand it again after the staining and branding is done? I'd use sanding paper with really small grain (like 2000 or even 4000)
Will the wood get "damaged" over the time? Is it "better" to apply a clear coating?
I hope someone can imagine what I wanna do and help me with these questions
When all of it works out as I imagine I'll post pictures of the building-process and the final result
I got the idea from a video I unfortunatelly cannot find anymore and that Jack Daniels Telecaster that is posted in some thread here.
Maybe I could also give YOU an idea for YOUR next project
PEACE!
PS: Admin, if this is the wrong topic to post this to feel free to move it to the right one!
