Had one of these about a fortnight now and overall I love it. The body and the neck are great (maybe needs a tiny bit of work on the frets and nut to bring it up to my exacting standards) The pickups sound really nice for ceramics, in fact I wasn't even sure they were ceramics until I removed the scratchplate/pickguard and had a look.
Weak parts ... The bridge is a very cheap Gibson Tune o Matic style that does not have enough adjustment to be able to set the intonation correctly on every string. This may have been made worse by the fact that I have swapped out the (in my opinion) nasty skinny original strings (9's) for a set of Roto-Sound Reds (11's) so I have fitted a roller bridge style Tune o Matic replacement (Chinese Wilkinson copy, £6.50 on ebay) bigger range of adjustment and better trem operation ... Fabulous!
The pickguard is an ugly shape in my opinion and also has small slider switches that are either on-off for each pickup. As I want to custom wire the guitar I got a couple of Switchcraft on-on-on switches that I find are too big for the fixing screw holes and slots in the existing pickguard. So I'm on the lookout for a Mustang one. I found a chrome control plate for £6 (ebay again).
As usual with cheap Far Eastern guitars the wiring, pots, caps and jack socket are beyond **** and won't last 6 months (why they do this I have no idea, for an extra fiver on the price they could use quality parts) So it's all coming out and some nice bits are going in.
Has anybody fitted an MS-60 with a Mustang pickguard? I dont want to buy one and then find out that it can't be modified to fit the guitar. If anyone has done this swap could they please let me know how it went.
One last point ... the neck on mine was finished (very well) in the worst banana yellow coloured poly lacquer ... It it is vile. So I'm going to strip (acetone) it and refinish it with something a little less lurid.
I know this makes the MS-60 sound like it is a flawed product, but for the money it is amazing and as a beginners instrument it is fine. When I started playing in the mid 70's nothing of this playability existed for less than a couple of hundred quid, and over the years I've played plenty of Fenders that were worse than this. If you intend to use the whammy bar (Jaguar/Jazzmaster style, much better than a Mustang) and your ears are finely tuned to spot on intonation then I would swap the bridge out and play the thing till the electrics start crackling and need to be replaced. Anything else is Just aesthetics and my fussiness.
