I need some help and tips ladies and gents I wonder how to set up EQ for rock, punk and metal with fuzz or distortion. I am mostly concerned with the Mids. Do you use lots of Mids for these genres or less? I am after a punchy, articulate but still bassy sound saturated with fuzz, like the Big Muff. I know I am playing on a multi fx pedal designed for a guitar but the bass sounds good its just that I cant find the right EQ balance. So any and all help and tips welcome. I know you cant tell me exactly but just share what you have for EQ for these genres so I have a guide line.

Ok, just to add; This is not for bend situation or amp etc, just me with a solo bass into headphones via multi fx pedal, so no need to adjust to the room, guitars, drums, mund-harmonica etc

Just go by ear with what sounds good to you, there is no standard.

As Blablas says there's no standard. Where you position your hand to play, how hard or soft you attack, even the angle you pluck the strings all have a huge effect on your sound. These are different for everybody and rarely explainable

Dont get me wrong lads but your replies are typical for what I read over at Talk Bass forum I understand what you say and I agree but my question was something else, more of a seeking inspiration kind of, like guide line not a rule or dogma. We all play differently sure but still we can share what we do and how we do it no For example "when I play Punk I ... use lots of Mids and very little Treble and what not" kind of sharing, not a "set bass on 9'h ,mids on 12'h and treble on 2h" rule book Ok, Im off to upload my very first attempt in recording music and on a bass guitar non-the-less (paperbag)

something other to think about, if you play your bass together with other instruments they will be fighting for room in the mix. so if you like to have lots of mids on your guitar for Punk then you need to have less of mids on your bass for them to work together. the kick drum and bass are any engineers enemy they are the once that want to dominate the low end. luckily the kick usually is somehow consistent but the bass moves a bit around. A rule many mixing engineers live by is never to boost in EQ, but I am more like if you add somewhere you need to lower somewhere else. Do not know if this makes any sense to you or is of any help

I strongly recomended to use an equalizer AFTER the drive (OD/DIST/FUZZ) to cut rather - not boost (or maybe a little optional) frequencies. This can change a drive character very well. I also recomended to use parallel loop (paralooper) for better dry signal chain control. It's very important, to stay with dynamic low-end when drive the bass sound. This is my GAS list paralooper I'm waiting for: brimstoneaudio.com/laboratory.html

That para looper looks like a good tool indeed. Yes thats what I want from a bass sound, that dynamic low end which does not get musshy or farty but articulate and clear (even if overdriven) so you get goosebumps when you hear it I just find EQs so comlicated ...

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

I was reading an article only yesterday about the kick drum and how to avoid too much bass in it. The Music Radar site is brilliant (as is Sound On Sound). This is an example of my live sound: soundcloud.com/omson2711/octavashure-rec-live-bass It was quick demo of paralooper with whoolly mammoth fuzz. It's very usefull in band context for me... Today I replace mammoth with turbo rat (Motorola LM308).
