I'm sure this has been talked about at length, but just to get a fresh perspective: Considering the newer models have Roswell pickups, what's your thoughts on whether the coil split version is worth the few extra bucks? The epi 339 I used to have I set one humbucker on full and the other split, and then mostly used the middle position, which on that guitar was a nice balance. But I think it's not that much different than turning the volume knob down slightly. So I'm thinking I probably don't need the coil split version. What are your thoughts? Do any of you guys swear by the coil split on the Harley Benton? The other question is: are you happy with the pickups in the HB-35 without feeling a need to swap? This time around it will only be worth it to me if I don't have to buy some other pickups.

I think Roswell pups are lifeless, lack mids, anemic they are, and worth swapping for something better. That being said be aware of the fretbaord material in both models which is Blackwood (Pine, very soft material). Maybe you prefer that but I dont. Be informed Good luck!

But I think it's not that much different than turning the volume knob down slightly. So I'm thinking I probably don't need the coil split version. It is a world of difference. You get a lot more high end from a split humbucker, which is immediately perceptible in attack. You hear the pick on the string, it feels like a guitar, not a piano. You can split one and keep the other pick-up full for that texture both produce together. I have no HB-35, only a SC-450 Plus but these are the exact same pick-ups and I feel they need that added clarity of the split sound. I would go with the Plus for that reason alone but I would also want the flame top.

Also, be carefull not to say the same thing about a pup with and without nickel cover. The sound can differ greatly, as I have already experienced myself : I had The same set of quite good Alnico V pups on a very good 335 clone ( covered ) and another set ( uncovered ) that I had installed on my CST24HB : the 2 sets sounded almost opposite.
- The uncovered ones had great attack and souded "straight" afterwards => I finished by replacing them with Duesenberg Crunchbucker+Domino - The covered won't move from my 335 copy : the attack is way smoother, but they sing warm and are perfect either for cristal clean jazz or grainy crunches, with a lot of mids
The same pups, with the same impedance, just covered or not

If what you say is true, that might explain why I liked one pickup split and the other full on on the Epi I had. Unfortunately, that guitar got stolen just before Christmas, so exploring a replacement.

How do I remove them?

I found videos showing how to remove covers but I won't do it.

I've done that too "take the pickup covers off" and a few times had great results. The other thing that's worked, a number of times actually, is just adjusting the pickup heighth (for me usually lowering them). People should more often do that than just immediately replace. It might surprise you, is all you have to do is find the sweet spot.
