Hi Brethren and Sistren! I've been jonesing for the Harley Benton HB-60 hollow body bass www.thomann.de/intl/harley_benton_hb_60_wb.htmNow that I'm in the U.S., the price is $285.32, plus shipping $33.57, plus roughly $15 import duties. That's a total of $339.89 Some of you know that I'm in the process of building my own bass from a kit. My first time doing it and I'm enjoying it a lot! I was poking around the internet and came across this kit for a hollow body bass: www.bargainmusician.com/inc/sdetail/hb_bass_body_style/94/230It's $219.99 with free shipping. I think I may go for it at some point. Attachments:

I like those inlays far better on the kit than on the HB bass. Oh man, this forum is inducing too much GAS. I should find another hobby like ... (thinking) ....

Yeah, they are nice inlays. The only thing I do like about the HB, other than it's an HB is the pickguard. I like how it looks. I wonder if I could make one or use one off of another model?

There is no black magic involved in making a pickguard - Just some material, a few tools, lots of patience (very important!) and a plan of where you want to go with it.

I'd prefer using black magic What I've done by hand, so far, has given me ok results, but not as good as I'd like, nor the control for complex curves. And I don't have the ability to purchase a router, yet. How do YOU shape pickguards, blablas?

You don't want know... I use black magic ... sort of... aka serious professional equipment that I normally use for my work. I begin with making a CAD outline for the pickguard I want and once it has the right dimensions and shape I send this CAD file over to our laser-engraving machine to cut it out, after it is cut out I make the beveled edge on a small edge breaking routing machine. Really simple, but not the tools meant for home use. But I also made them in a more traditional home-brew way - using a paper template, a simple band-saw, some files, sandpaper and scraping blades. In the end this will get the same result but takes more time, practice and patience.

Isn't CAD something that comes over from the 5th dimension, after opening a portal by chanting......aw, never mind That sure is a fancy way to do it! Actually, as I read it, I think that you mentioned that to me a while back on the TB forum, in regards to the scroll bass I'm making. The pickguard I'm currently reshaping I did with a hacksaw blade, files, sandpaper and scraping with the edge of an exacto knife, so it sounds like I'm doing it right
