I remember them developing that at the time, supposedly it was going to revolutionise guitar. I distinctly remember it was supposed to make a guitar sound like a violin or at least play the strings like a violin bow. Wasn't that part of the reason Godley & Creme split from 10cc?

Big clunky thing. Rolling the strings close to the bridge is not exactly the best idea either. I never pluck them there and suppose it is what produces this heavily coloured sound we hear in the video. This thing should be on rails. Archtop players would need their own rails, of course.
I would propose an alternative:

There's a solution to that motor problem too:

I prefer the seated version:

Being attached by tape you can place it anywhere on the body...if you don't mind a small knitting machine getting in the way!! But I think it sounds better on a bass ("of course it does" says JAC - everything does!"):

There is not doubt about the desirability of the sound. I would not call it an effect by the way, no more than a bow or a pick.
The Ebow seems to be the better idea, though. Most of the violin literature plays on one string at a time. The major requirement for a guitar equivalent is the ability to move to another string fast enough. I'd like to try it.

The intro to "In The Evening" could be played just as well with an Ebow. I don't like that sound very much, I wonder if there is some tremolo on it. The bass does sound better in texture. I suppose they don't make a 7-string bass version

The Ebow can be used in a variety of interesting ways in comparison to a fixed system. I suppose the Fernandes sustainer is similar to a Sustainiac. These seem to be passive effects from the player's point of view, something that works in an indiscriminate way on what the string gives, rather than something the player can use to shape notes. The Gizmotron is active.
It would be interesting to see someone knowledgeable and experienced in all of them demonstrate the differences.
How come no one has come up with a finger bow? Some fingertip with an appropriate surface that could be run along the string. It would act as the grating wheels of the gizmotron but with the flexibility of the player's touch. It could even be dirt cheap as long as the required material is not moon rock or something equally silly.
