A little while ago (pre-COVID) I picked up a good used bass for cheap, which I was told wasn't working properly. (I was looking for a project and this sort of fell in my lap.) And all that was wrong was that the pickups were so low the strings were essentially out of the magnetic field. Once set up it had a lovely clanky tone, just what I wanted. Very good value for money.
But there's a thing. The previous owner had erased all identifying marks including the headstock decals, and it took me a long while to figure out that it's an HB neck, for a PB-20. It's more complicated than that, though, as 1) it had a Squier neck plate, and 2) the colour is an electric blue, a colour that I cannot find on any pics of PB-20s I've been able to find.
My question is, is there any way of telling whether the body is indeed a PB-20? It's definitely not a Squier P Bass body because the pickguard holes are wrong, but they're right for a North American Fender P Bass. Does HB use the Fender shape and hole spacing for the PB-20 pickguard? If not I may have a VERY weird hybrid...
Thanks, all.

Hard enough getting a Squier scratchplate to fit a Squier. Since their launch nearly 40 years back Squiers have been built in 5 different countries by at least 8 different companies. None of them used the exact same parts, parts even changed during production runs. The PB-20 may look like a 7ender but the body is actually smaller, not by a great deal but it's enough. The generic plates on ebay generally fit You can't even ID from the headstock. Rockwood basses used the same hs shape, this was before the change to the Peavey style. I wouldn't be surprised if this £99 Artist PB-2 comes from the same place the PB-20 does. www.artistguitars.co.uk/products/artist-pb2-blue-electric-bass-guitar-with-accessor-13682

There's enough differences between the HB, Rockwood and Artist headstock shapes to tell me it's an HB. I took the body to a nearby music store where I knew I'd be undisturbed and compared it to the Fenders up on the wall, and while it's close it's definitely a little smaller and a slightly different shape, and with different contours. And it's completely different from any of the Squiers. I'm gonna call the whole thing an HB and get back to refinishing the neck. Ought to have pics soon - this has been quite a fun project so far. Thanks for your help!

If your fancy a scratch plate Change and don't want to plug the screw holes we can help.
In the post before this I put a link to a scratch plate sellers in Glasgow. You can send Brian your plate for an' exact by template or gave it cut without screw holes. Another option is I borrow a pb-20 plate before my next visit.
I'm through there once a month.

So glad I don't live near Glasgow or I'd be in there like a shot spending money I haven't got. I've saved him on ebay though. You'd be safe enough, Brian's insurance is a strict "employees only" policy. Every visit I'm stuck out in the carpark tidying the motor
