Just to think out loud here.
Essentially if the attenuator is turned all the way down to silent, wouldn't that be an indicator that the dummy load is working and it would then be safe to run with no speaker as a dummy load as it is obviously handling the load already?
Speaking specifically for silent recording. The line outs on these units are inactive when fully attenuated, and the recommendation is 9:00ish with no speaker as the dummy load will handle it.
I'm working my way through my amps, testing this theory before I get to my important amps. Seems to make sense to me but I'm hoping someone can confirm this.
This is basically for silent recording and practice into a cab IR. Worries me but I think the science is sound.

Er, uh... this is well over my head. I just solder stuff together and pray the power doesn't go out. Sincerely, intenslycalm I assembled a low-watt attenuator based off a GUITAR.com article. It works well, but is intended for an amp less than 20w, switchable 4 or 8 ohm. lamusician, what attenuator are you referring to? I kinda expect there to be many build options, and each option my have unique ways of handling a load. If you can share a schematic, or a product, someone may be able to review and chime in. Your question is well beyond me.

I was referring to the PA-100 Harley Benton Attenuator. They are clones of the Jet City one. I have got it all figured out. I was just concerned that something this affordable could be a viable "dummy load". It all works as promised and I'm quite pleased with the unit. The line out works great but the XLR out not so much, unfortunately. The attenuator definitely exceeded my expectations.

lamusician , What you expect to do with a (good, well built) power attenuator is in theory correct, since such a power attenuator must compulsorily house a dummy load resistor of sufficient sizing to absorb the power of the amp, because only a little to very little part of the signal will be used. I peronnally use a DIY Dummy 4/8/16R 100W for my amp power tests and measurements : By the way, the specs of the PA-100 Harley Benton mentions the dummy load facility clearly : Power Attenuator Useful tool for rehearsal room, live and recording applications Tube amplifiers as they sound best - high output level with reduced and controlled volume Can also be used as a dummy loadInput power up to 100W LED with overload indicator Quiet fan Controls: Speaker Level and Line Level Inputs: 4/8/16 Ohm Balanced speaker output XLR DI output with speaker simulation Dimensions: 19 x 14 x 11 cm Weight: 1.5 kg So it should work as you expect without danger for your amp. Cheers,
