Hi all.
Thought I'd share my experience with wraparound bridges, on my three Hbs , a DC junior, SC junior and SC special.
I never really had any issues with the original bridge witch does the job just fine, apart from on a few early models where it was not possible to lower the bridge enough to get low action. On my first sc special I couldn't get the action lower than 2mm on the low E even when running a perfectly straight neck, so returned it and replacement is just fine.
Because if my experience with my SC special , while waiting for the replacement I bought a Wilkinson fully adjustable wraparound, similar to the original, but with a lower profile, should I still have issues with the replacement guitar. This was not the case, so the bridge lay on a shelf, unused untill I decided , out of boredom , to fit is to my SC junior.
To be fair the Wilkinson item does look better (to me) than the original Hb item, but apart from that I couldn't really tell a difference in sound. Actually, as with the original, I would sometimes get some odd audible (not amplified) vibration from the saddles, easily fixed by unloading and loading again the saddle spring, by adjusting the intonation screw.
About a month later I thought I'd try a simpler deign , with no saddle adjustment and therefore no moving parts apart from the bridge post adjusting screws (for intonation). The bridge is compensated but notchless, so wasn't too sure about the design, but for the price I thought I'd give it a try...
And I am glad I did.
Sustain is so much better, no weird vibrations, and most amazing to me, intonation is spot on....and I mean really spot on...I'm very picky with intonation on all my guitars, all I had to do was adjust the screws so the E and e position was equivalent to the original bridge I removed and hey presto everything just worked great...
Sometimes the simpler things are the best.....at least in this case.
I am so happy with the bridge that I've ordered another two and they are going in my other wraparound guitars.
Cheers!
