I have a few HB instruments, and I'm thinking of buying a JB-75 FL or JB-40 fretless bass with Roswell pickups, so:
1) Reviews suggest the electronics aren't shielded so can hum a bit. Is this easily fixed, and is it any worse than other JBs?
2) Which of these would you buy, and why please?
Thanks, Max

The JB75 is heavy as hell - you probably know that. It sounds good, no doubt - but the boat anchor weight made me send it back.
Depends on what sound you want - and fretted or fretless is quite different as well.
I would prefer a Harley Benton JB-62CC SP or the HB 25th Anniversary JB.
If I wanted fretless I would buy that JB40 FL.

Thanks DerAlex. In the event I chickened out of buying the JB75/40 despite the ****** reviews, because of the weight. I've read reviews suggesting some lighter HB Jazz basses can suffer from neck dive, like many makes of JB. So, out of the fat into the fire - I bought a B-650 6 string fretted from HB. It's alder body, maple neck, reviews say it's light for a 6, with relatively little neck dive (for a 6), it sounds OK, and although it's active, you can play it passive. I nearly bought the fretless 6 - but I want to play chords around the 12th fret, and wiser and better players told me tuning chords would be hard up there on a fretless. I have a HB B-30 fretless acoustic bass. I love fretless, but (I think) sense prevailed, for once. At the price of HB instruments, I could probably buy the fretless if I get on well with the fretted one first

Wow, I bought that six string used and it's a monster. 😂
Yes, weight-wise it is below 5kg so not bad at all.
I just can't play it and I wonder how one can play a six string.
I just didn't sell it yet because I got it so cheap. But maybe a yound lad shows up and then I will donate it. 😉

I just can't play it and I wonder how one can play a six string. I had a look at a bunch of 6 string bass vids first, and there seem to be several schools:
* 6 string B to C prog rock/jazz noodling - huge skill and knowledge, results amazing but not to my taste.
* Usual 4 EADG middle strings plus two outsiders, low grunt and high twang when required - most players.
* Low E to high F tuned, conventional 4 string bass EADG plus high 3 string chording on GCF - That's my plan.
* Downtuners/metal low rumble, plus look at all the other strings I got...
Yes, I know you should play it as one 6 string homogenous instrument, but it seems there aren't many good enough out there... let me know if HB copies Aria and makes a 3 fretless/3 fretted one

The JB75 is heavy as hell - Not mine, just a bit heavier than a Strat, and incredibly comfortable to play standing up
Then, when you play single coil pick ups, always expect a bit hum
