One of the issues many people face when buying a Harley Benton bass is the that the instrument may not be set up to play properly.
This is not just the case with Harley Bentons, many instruments are not set up correctly when they arrive, which means they can be difficult, and very uncomfortable to play.
When an instrument receives a proper set-up, the change can be amazing. However, many people are afraid to do their own set-ups, due to the risk of damaging something, the main worry being the truss rod.
However, as long as this is done carefully, without making any brusk adjustments or over doing it, it is very easy to set-up your own instrument.
The perfect set up is a very personal preference, and with time, you will find what works best for you, but there are some good starting points that you can begin with, and build your personal preferences from their.
Rather than explain how to do a set up here, there is a very good series of 4 videos posted by Elixir Strings on Youtube, where John Carruthers takes us through the set up step by step. He makes a far better job of explaining (and setting up an instrument) than I could ever dream of doing.
If this is your first time doing a set up, I recommend watching all 4 videos first, and then going back to the beginning and following the video step by step.
Here is the first of the videos in the series, at the end of the video you can quite easily click on part 2.
If, after watching the videos, you have any questions, feel free to post them here and I (or those more experienced than me) will be happy to help.
