Got a BZ 4000 NT as my first Bass yesterday. Very nice, a couple of small blemishes on the finish but nothing I'm gonna worry about. I do however have a question:
In passive mode when I changed the balance between the pickups from only bridge to only neck the output volume is the same and only the bass tone knob appears to have any effect on the sound. In active mode when I change the balance between the pickups from only bridge to only neck the output volume is significantly louder with one of the pickups (knob turned fully clockwise is loud) and in fact I'd actually say that the quiet one is actually quieter in active mode than in passive mode. In active mode all of the tone knobs have an effect on the sound no matter which pickup is in use.
So I suppose there is actually 2 questions :
1) Is the tone control behavior to be expected - I assume yes as in passive mode it is just a tone and in active it is a 3 channel EQ. 2) Is there anything I can do to make the quiet pickup louder or is it going to have to go back ?

In passive no tone at all its only in active you have bass boost/cut mid boost/cut and treble boost/cut. The pickup selectoe knob is like the tone as in it has a dimple in the center position which is both pick ups on then its a blend between neck and bridge depending on where the knob is relative to the centeral position. You may be confusing the pickup selectoe knob with a tone knob as thete is quite a difference in sound between neck and bridge pup or bass may be defective. First port of call is to bin the crap batteries that come with it and replace with new alkaline and unplug when not in use as this powers off the electronics. Any q's throw em at me and congrats you have a very very nice bass there I love mine.

Just went and plugged mine in and: the neck pup appears louder than the bridge in active and less noticeable in passive. The reason for this is because there is way more string movement at the neck position therefore more volume from that position. No tone at all in passive but a huge difference in volume between passive and active so if your bass is louder in passive than active id say its return time. Its worth getting one you are happy with as its a ridiculously good bass for very little money.

Thanks for checking. I am officially a muppet. With the guitar standing on the floor the top pot is volume & active/passive switch, the one that is down and to the right of that is an eq control (this is the one I thought was balance), down and to the left of that eq is balance, while down and to the right is another eq and the pot at the very bottom is the 3rd eq. That makes much more sense. Just need to work out which of the eq's is for which frequencies. As you say its very nice but I've only been playing a couple of months, having tried (and failed) to learn guitar in my late 20's and not really doing anything for the last 15 years ... I've been borrowing a Cort and a Hohner "The Jack" bass and from a how it feels in my hands, how easily I can move my fingers around the neck and fet buzz etc, it is easily better than the Cort and certainly on a par with the Hohner ... as for the sound I prefer it to the Cort single coils but haven't really played it long enough or with others to be able to compare against the Hohner.

i agree with Derek regarding the eq on the amp not the bass, not just for this bass but as i dont play covers i only want "my tone". There is a seriously hot output from this and do use the bass boost on the bass for dubstep when i want a lot of signal for effects.
