Not sure if I should post this in ukulele or here but reckon ill get more hits here. So as the title suggests im after some new strings for my deko uke bass. The ones that come with require tuning every time I play and as a lefty deko poped up I ordered one for a mate and in my rush to close out the order before the deko disappeared I ordered the aquila thunderguts but I now suspect that the originals are aquila thunderguts so think I should probably change order. I went onto aquila's website to try and find out the difference between thunder reds and regular thunderguts and they say to only use these strings on a 2o inch scale uke but the HB is 21 inch. Will they still fit? Should I look at a different make, I dont want steel strings as a big part of the charm is the mad fat rubbery strings. Ideally im after a stable string that wont want 2/3 turns of the machine head every day and a little more tension would be great. Also if you know the difference between the red and white thundergut id love to know, is it just a colour thing? Thanks a million

I've put a set of Thunder Reds on my HB uke bass, they are slightly thinner and stiffer than the stock elastic rubber bands, the length is no problem. They also stay better in tune (a little bit ), the detuning is due to the elastic nature of the strings.

I have thundergut strings on a uke bass, 22" (559mm) scale diy conversion from a baritone uke body. I found that they took several weeks of tuning up to stretch in, but they eventually settled down and now stay roughly in tune. They might need a quarter to half turn if left for a long time.

Thanks lads great to hear. I think ill change the order to thunder reds. They look sweet on your lefty Blablas. I like the little "finishing touch" thumb rest too, ive a violin bass that needs one of them.

Hi, I just picked up an HB bass uke and loving it! But when the time comes, how on earth do I change the strings? They disappear into the body with no sign of any access to the where they go

Take em off the tuning pegs, push em back thru bridge and then reach into the sound hole and retrieve the string ends and pull out. Save the little bits on the end of the strings for new set as not all brands come with them ive heard.

Thanks salteedog First and foremost, buy the right strings! The Thunder Reds I used before fit without any problem. With the Kala-U set that caused this crash the A and D string did not fit the tuners. Changing strings: the string should have a knot or crimped-on ferule at one end. Thats the end that should be inside the body. To get the new string inside the the hole in the body is fairly simple, take out the old string, put it through the hole from the top and pull it out until it's sticking out of the sound-hole, tape the new string to the end of the old string and carefully pull it through the hole, now all you have to do is attach the string to the tuner and tune it up. There are several different ways to do this, do a YouTube search to discover which you like most.
