Does anyone else here have a Squier Pro Tone series guitar? I think they were made between 1996 and 1998 before Fender decided to end the production. The rumour is that the Pro Tone Squiers became a too big competitor to the MIM Fenders. Considering that the MIM Fenders weren't that impressive there might be a bit of truth in it but I guess the main reason was the fact that Korea became too expensive so they moved the production to Indonesia and stuck with the entry level models.
I own a solid ash Telecaster with a humbucker in the neck position. It's acutally a 2 piece body but it's so nicely matched that you can only see at the side where the strap button is. It sounds and plays great. The humbucker is a bit limited though. It has a really nice round and fat sound, perfect for semi-clean leads but if you hit it with power chords and distortion it becomes quite muddy. Our band was quite influenced by Kyuss and other Stoner rock bands that turned up in the 90's so I didn't mind the muddiness.
They made several different models including a red Thinline Tele and a few different Strats. Among them a blue one which apparently has turned green over the years. I'm always keeping my eyes open for a Pro Tone but so far I haven't seen one in Sweden. There's a few for sale on Ebay though including one like mine in the UK for £275. A bit too pricey. Had I lived in the US then I would definitely had gone for the Floyd Rose Strat, current bid at $61.
Anyway.. This is what mine looks like. I've been planning on replacing the pickguard for a black one for 20 years now. Still planning
