Not tried the pyramid brand but Paul McCartney used them on his hoffner violin bass. What are you putting them on and what sound do you want to get. I personally use daddario chromes which are flat wound and supposed to be a brighter sound than regular flat wounds on my eko violin bass and one jazz bass.

I'm planning to stick 'em on my fretless Stingray Vintage copy. It's a maple fretboard which I've flooded with superglue a few times so it's quite well protected but I don't want roundwounds to chew it up and the strings that are on it now were on it before I defretted it.

Id say go for it mate, double check weather you need long or short scale as I think these are marketed at the violin bass brigade and even though they are a short scale they take long strings because of the bridge. I love flat wounds and will try out tapewounds too next string change. I have the flats on my jazz bass that has worn frets as they will not wear the frets down so should be perfect for your fretless.

Big fan of flat & tape wound but never tried Pyramids. It's always been La Bella, Thomastik Infelds or Fenders if money's tight. I've a couple of sets of D'Addario Chromes but flats sound better the older they get so never got around to trying them. Flats on a Ray will sound great. It worked for Louis Johnson Any particular reason why you're keen to try the Pyramids ?

I wondered about the Fenders too. Any problem with them?

@defjef No problem with the Fenders, quite a high tension but no problems. Status Hot Wire were another make I've used, made by Picato I believe. If you do go for Pyramids report back your thoughts but I'll be honest looking at the price difference I'll be sticking with the La B's and TI's. Last cupboard inventory showed 22 sets of tapes & flats. Average life span of flats 4 - 6 years!!! I'll be near 200 year old afore I need more strings

Well, that's a good question to ask you kodiakblair. For fretless would you say high tension was a good or a bad thing for a fretless? Obviously the action's lower so my brain says higher tension might be a good thing to avoid string rattle against the board. Any thoughts? Tip of the day: NEVER do any maths to work out how much money you currently have invested in strings!

@defjef I'd say not a bad thing having a decent tension string on fretless. I've sold the Tanglewood fretless that had Fender flats but find the roundwound really work on this fella
