I just went on a rampage to try to find one single fanned fret guitar that actual looks pleasant. That hasn't been under-designed or overdesigned. Electric or acoustic, I wasn't fussy. I pretty much failed. They look so untempting to me as though the designer couldn't help going one step too far and had to make it either look like a piece of bespoke furniture or else cobbled it together out of a parking accident. The necks are often hideously wide or somebody gave up on the headstock or else decided it needed some extra unnecessary bumps or wobbles. The best that I could find was this. It looks as though form followed function here and then some nice finessing was done to the bridge. Anyone seen anything else better. Something that doesn't shout, "Look at me. I'm so 'out there'."

I'm a bit limited on my understanding of anything much newer than a Tele or Les Paul @defjef but digging into your brain mate what's the benefit / disadvantage of a fan fret? Maybe I'm not seeing the big picture but is the spacing narrower towards the high E or wider towards the low E or is it neither? Is there an actual playabillity or sonic benefit that I'm missing?

Two benefits john. Tension across the strings is more even so they respond more equally. Bending a top E is as easy as bending a G and the bassier strings, being longer, have more tension which can be particularly useful if you are dropping the tuning on any of them. No more waggly buzzy bottom E's or dropped D's or...how low do you want to go? Get a bass for god's sake. Secondly they can be more comfortable to play because the frets fan just like our fingers do. Of course it depends where the most vertical fret is as to how comfortable this may be and that'll depend on where your hand naturally falls on the neck.

Cheers for that @defjef. Wouldn't muscle memory take over and make things go a bit "off" if you've played standard for a few decades? The bending aspects not selling it but I can see the benefit to new players with different strengths. I need to know more. One thing I've noticed is most fan frets have better body wood, almost verging on Bass standard.

When you say 'better body wood' are you referring to the furniture look that I loathe so much?!
