I'm planning to test my first tube and this afternoon. What do I need to look for, as far as testing the proper workings?
I know to turn the knobs, to check if they crack or work. But how long does a tube and have to warm up to test the workings when it's warmed up?
I also read that it was a good idea to turn it on, without anything plugged in. Then turn up the volume, it shouldn't squeak, squeal or make a lot of noise. Cause if it does, there could be a problem.
For the record; it's a Laney LC50, tubes are replaced with a TAD set and the original speaker is replaced with a Celestion G12H-100. Don't know the proper 2ndhand value, but I can pick it up for 190 euros.

depending on the room temperature it can take a 2 to 3 minutes to warm up. for the rest its basically wat you already mentioned, also check that the speaker is connect before you start it up. if you have a standby switch theres no use to lower the volume, just put it in standby. ideale you should crank it full open to see if the valve don't rattle or cut out for example and the speaker can handle the volume, but cranking a 50W tube amp full open is not obvious in a house or apartment. let alone to handle the feedback and hum depending on the type and quality of your pickups, shielding and so on. to much feedback can damage the speaker. my 40W tube amp in house is used max at 3 and that already LOUD, i once used it at 8 but i was in another room with the door closed and i was side ways to the speaker. i only hit one cord stopt, got me some earplugs and continued (i don't have direct neighbors).

I believe that the replacement speaker, a Celestion G12H 100, is about 100 watts. So it should handle the 50watts of the amp. He mentioned he had twins, so setting it to max to test it is probably out of the question I'm taking along my HB TE-52 to try it out. Don't know about shielding on those...

And I bought it... Sounded great, very warm clean tone and a good sounding reverbtank. Fiddled around on it for about 15 minutes, couldn't notice any sound dropping or difference. Only the Kabinet itself is a little scruffed up, but internal it all looks nice. Got it for a nice price, at least, I think so. Couldn't find any info on 2nd hand prices. But they sell new for over 700. I paid €190,-. Now I only need to get me a 2 button footswitch, and I need to make a mesh cover to put on the back for protection of the tubes. He didn't have that anymore. But I have an old ironing board lying around, that'll make a good mesh cover
